Note of caution: avoid taking the overnight bus from Belgrade to Pristina, unless you actually plan to be dropped off in the middle of nowhere at 4:00 in the morning with all your luggage but without a clue as to where the hell you are. Trying to find your hostel hours before sunrise with an overly simplistic hand-drawn map on an hour of sleep is nothing to sneeze at, mind you. Fortunately though, a line of taxi drivers were already circling outside the deserted bus stop in Pristina, Kosovo, and readily pounced on the only idiot who chose to arrive at such an ungodly hour. I was immediately whisked away by the driver who spoke the best English, and within the quarter hour, I was dropped off at the doorstep of the Guesthouse Velania. My room. ... read more

In retrospect, I guess it's a good thing that I still haven't learned how to say "no." When Matt asked me to join him for a visa run to the Balkans, my one condition was that we go as far as Kosovo. The time-spent-on-buses to overall-duration-of-trip ratio was ridiculously high - read: 4 nights on buses, 2 nights in actual beds, and no less than six border crossings. Although it was grueling, it turned out to be well worth the effort. The Balkans are a multi-course meal of languages, a buffet of cultures, and a glass of beer full of, well, full of beer. Surprises remain abundant in this quirky corner of the world. The bus we left İstanbul on progressively emptied as we moved west. Each of us on the bus, who hadn't purchased our ... read more

Started to freak out a bit once I realized I did not get a stamp out of Macedonia or a stamp in to Kosovo. The bus was already going and cant really do nothing about it anymore. It happens ther is another tourist in the bus, I asked her when we arrived at the bus station in Prishtina if she got a stamp, she doeas not know not even bothering to look, she saw a police officer and talked to her and when she got back she said the police said it should be fine. Hmmm... for 2nd opinion we tried to ask the info desk at the station but was not any help as he does not speak English! A Spaniard overheard me inquiring about bus to Montenegro or Albania, he does not speak English ... read more

Well Kosovo is something special let me tell you!! I had left my plans open a bit to check out the small war torn country, now that it has become its own state. I Arrived in Prishtina walked along Bill Clinton Blvd.(which is the main Road) then tried to find something touristy to do.. Well that was my first mistake, there is nothing for tourist to do there other then take photos of UN trucks(so thats what I did). I guess I should have known that before coming and I have to say it was good to see only 2 months after their independents. None-the-less I only spent 2 days there then moved right along. So here are the few photos I have of Kosovo.... read more

Greetings from the Balkans....I have a few pictures and not much else.....one week from right now I should be landing in Ljubjana, Slovenia, enroute to Munich...mmmmmm beer and sausage!!!!!! I'll post something before then but probably not much. I am adjusting to the way of life here well. I going to attempt to watch American Football this evening. Kick off isn't for another 3 hours or so. My list of restaurants to try is growing and I hope to hit a few this week. The cold and snow I've been warned about is here, but still nothing worse than I'd expect in Upstate New York for this time of year. ... read more

Here are some pictures of food, that have been requested. This is all food from my kitchen, except the beer and wine of course, that I borrowed from another faculty member.... For the record, when I input where I am, I have to put Serbia as the country, in order for Kosovo to show up, legally speaking it still is within Serbia, but NO one here thinks of it as Serbia, you have to cross through customs to get into Serbia and then back into Kosovo. And actually the Serbs consider me in their country illegally. ... read more
