It’s been a few weeks since I have last chatted with everybody, and they have been some busy days. Mostly for Davina but I also was able to partake in all the festive holiday events. I suppose for being deployed here in Kosovo things were pretty darn good.
Davina is actually taking a nap so I thought I would just pop online and give everybody a real quick update. As the weather outside has been mild and it has been a week that most days we wore sunglasses and the lighter jackets, there is a realization by soldiers that “we will be going home this year!” So the countdowns are beginning. Some count by the days, some count by months and I see Davina’s countdown on her wall is by “Wednesdays”, which the number is down to 30! Even for me, this is encouraging and now have something to focus on.
So my guess is that in the next few weeks we will keep busy by trying to move onto the next phase of time. Things like taking all the Christmas decorations down outside, breaking out the warm winter clothing and I really think Davina and her roommate
will be cleaning and organizing their room. I sure wish all of you could see the goodies, trinkets and memorabilia. After watching my buddy open up her Christmas boxes I have come to the realization that it is very different to be deployed during the holidays vs. being at home in your normal surroundings.
The things people sent were just incredible. I do believe that most people sent things to her inner child and the very playful side of her. I think if she was at home that she would not have gotten so many cool things. Really, do you think she would have gotten a lump of coal that grows to 600 times its’ size when put in water, a marshmallow shooter, rocket balloons, inflatable punching bags, squirt guns and a waddling penguin pooper. Of course all things were not all fun and games; snuggly comfort was a pleaser. She was tickled with the super soft sheets, furry lounging pants and socks that were ultra velvety.
But enough about Davina. I am the luckiest of all! My friends in Bismarck sent me the coolest sleep shirt, pillow and sleeping bag. It was especially handmade just for me
and the best part… The print on the material is the SEATTLE SEAHAWKS! Now I can be a big fan just like Davina!
Overall, it was amazing to see the kindness in people across the United States. Boxes and boxes of cookies came from Cub Scout Pack 171 in Bismarck, ND, it seemed there were enough for every soldier here to have at least one. The Sacred Heart School in Bermuda Dunes California reached deep and sent comfort packages for soldiers and also boxes with educational supplies for the children of Kosovo. It was a wondrous thing to see grateful smiles and gestures of thanks as people received there items sent from so far away! So I know that Davina is so thankful for everything that came through the mail channels and found their way to Kosovo. I am just happy I got to help open presents every once in a while.
So I am going to close for now, much to prepare for as this week looks like it’s gonna be a busy one. I get to ride in a helicopter and I couldn’t be more excited!
