Lucca
The narrow streets inside the walls of Lucca Wednesday 8th June - update.
Things are bubbling along here. Countryside is wonderful, wine, beer & spirits are cheap in Italy. Food also. We’ve had a fair bit of rain, but it remains pleasantly warm interspersed with periods of sunshine. Attended Puccini opera in Lucca on Monday night in the original chapel that Puccini was baptised in and later performed. The concerts run every night in Lucca (Puccini’s birthplace) and various professional opera singers perform. Funds go toward maintaining the chapel and the event. The night we attended it was a single Pianist and just two 2 singers alternating and then combining toward the end. Sort of a mini opera, but in that hall it sounded oh so good. Goose bump stuff really. Went for a drive up into the Tuscan hills yesterday (relying very much on our Tom Tom GPS units) which was fantastic. Narrow meandering roads zig-zagging their way up and over the mountains. In places we found our selves in small villages where roads were barely wide enough for a car. We stumbled upon a great place for lunch and had an awesome meal with lots of beer and cheer which worked out at $10 per head.
Friendly people and amazing scenery. Last night we had the middle generation birthday celebrations (Janet turned 60, Feathers, Margie & me turn 50) The 3rd generation and partners made a superb meal for it and we had a good night with plenty of impromptu speeches.
Today we ventured into Pisa and climbed the leaning tower. Was surprising how much of an angle that thing really is on in real life – pictures don’t do it justice. As soon as you step inside, you tend to stagger into the wall because of the lean! Glad we made the effort to see it, and the crowds were surprisingly small. View from the top is great and makes you realise that Pisa is a relatively small town.
Till next entry.
Bill, Margie and Kate.
