cold in pisa La Dolce Vita
We had a wonderful stay in Italy. We spent 4 nights in a small town in Tuscany called Lucca. Our original plan was to go to Venice but as it was so cold over there we decided at the last moment to change our destination. Lucca was cold too, but with lots of layers and good coats we made it through. It is a beautiful medieval town, and we sampled the Dolce Vita (sweet life) the Italians live, as the boys tell you in the following:
Amit: “We arrived at Italy late at night so we ate something and went to sleep. The next morning we woke up ready to explore the city of Lucca. We climbed on the walls - Lucca has walls from the middle ages. We went to a chocolate store and bought some dark chocolate and it was so yummy we begged for more and our mom said tomorrow. Then we went to taste the ice cream of Italy and it was better than Tepoznieves. You know why? I ice cream was invented in Italy, that’s why. The next day we went to see the leaning tower of Pisa. Did you know it was
built completely straight but tilted because the ground under it was not stable enough? My dad and mom took a picture of me holding the leaning tower of Pisa. The next day we climbed a tower with trees on it, it was very beautiful, the view was beautiful because you could see the whole city of Lucca form the tower.”
Shakked: “Lucca is an amazing little town, really, with ancient stone walls, cobbled streets, and breath-taking houses from the Middle ages to the Rennessaince to the present. Our first day in Lucca was very exciting. We got up at 0900 ate breakfast and then went exploring the walls. The walls were about twenty feet high and seven feet thick. There was grass and moss growing in some places. As we walked along, the walls sometimes curved diagonally outward and then diagonally outward the other way, then diagonally inward, then diagonally inward the other way. This created a sort of diamond sticking out o the wall. The meant that, in case of an attack, more soldiers could stand on the wall than if it was a perfect straight wall.
After this, we went and ate lunch in our apartment. Now,
cold in Lucca
cold in Lucca about the food here. I think Italy should be called Eataly, because everyone is obsessed with food, especially pasta. They have good reason -the food is excellent, the best I ever tasted. Now, the Eatalians eat pasta breakfast, lunch and dinner, which is what we did!
On our second day we went on train to Pisa to see the leaning tower. It was amazing! The majestic white tower loomed overhead tilted at an odd angle as the result of ground movements. It’s side was dotted with pillars and windows as numerous as the starts. Beautiful. We wandered around Pisa for a while and then returned to Lucca. On our third and final day in Lucca, we went to see a Roman Amphitheatre. It was not much of an amphitheatre any more, just a circular stone space where buildings should have been. After that we went to climb a tower that was strange for this reason: it had trees growing on top of it. It was a beautiful view from up there. You could see the whole crimson lake of the city’s red roofs spreading out below you, with little ant-people going about their businesses on the streets that were like
bridges on the red lake.
Now, if you ever go Italy a word of warning: if you ask for hot chocolate beware: you will get a mug of actually melted chocolate! Delicious We also went to an ice cream shop that contained the best chocolate ice cream I have ever had the honor of tasting. We will just have to see if it is as good in Argentina!”
So as you can see from the boys’ accounts, we all loved Italy. We all enjoyed the beautiful town, narrow streets, amazing food (all cooked in our apartment) and the treats - wonderful ice cream and chocolate. We also had some quiet family times, playing cards, listening to music, watching a movie. As it was so cold outside it felt great to be cozy inside.
Now we are in steaming Rio, staying with our wonderful friends, Andre and Christy and their daughter Maya. We are already missing Italy as it so hot here and there is no Italian ice cream, but we are also excited about upcoming Carnival and the opportunity to be with friends.
