Bringing my Family to Florence
There is a lot to see and do as you enter a new place to visit or live. We have a new pastor at our church in Whitley city, Kentucky. As he arrived last week the locals flooded him with lists and ideas of where he needs to go visit, so he and his family can take in all the wonderful places and views to experience while in their new home far from Florida. Like him, we as students have been given many suggestions from those who have visited Firenze, Italy before. So much to do and so little of time to do it in. I personally have taken in so much here in my new experiences, and I have enjoyed everyone. It is hard for me to
decide my favorite because all have been a beautiful and learning experience for me. From the sights, smells, food, language, shopping, and learning experiences, I'll have to say that I have been wrapped up in the religious aspect of this beautiful city and its history. I don't think I even thought that this would be a part of this learning experience. My Christianity is the most important aspect of me as a person. I have been moved by the deep expressions from the Bible through the artwork that decorate every wall and corner of this place. Everywhere I look, I am reminded of the sacrifice of my Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, and all of those who were a part of His life here on earth. Never in my life was I able to picture the scenes in my mind that I have see with my eyes here. The detail in the artwork depicts emotions and a realness in the characters that I have never known before. The artwork has brought them to life as real people to me. I have heard their names over and over through the stories that I read, hear, and teach to the children at
church. I am a Baptist, but I have a greater appreciation for the Catholic church now because of what I have witnesses. Their devotion to display the stories of the Bible for everyone to see and understand, and the time, patience, and sacrifices that were put into each masterpiece completely blows my mind with amazement. I can not in my wildest dreams even begin to think about spending my whole life working on one piece of art.
At home in Kentucky, we have many places that are beautiful and meaningful in our close surroundings that we as residents have not seen yet. Someone mentioned yesterday that they have lived here all their lives and still had not been inside or to the top of the Duamo. That's crazy, huh? I think we are all guilty of not appreciating our home towns enough, and experiencing the places and things that are in arms reach. At home my Family and I tend to be very lazy. We talk about seeing it all one day, but everyday we put it off until tomorrow.
In my family, we all have an interest in art
and architecture. There is so much to see here, and I think that if I were to move my Family here, they would be astonished. I can also see that we would be more active both physically and mentally. I envision my husband and I taking evening walks and gazing at all the lines, angles, and designs that envelop the buildings. We did this when we were younger in our hometown of Danville, Kentucky. I can see my daughter shopping in every store and running around town in her spare time after classes or work. She wouldn’t spend nearly as much gas money and would have to trade her car in for more shoes, as if she needs any more. There are many opportunities for her to learn and grow here, and I think that maybe her interest in her future career could possibly lean more toward the arts or fashion field if we were to move here. Not that there is anything wrong with the medical field that she is pursuing at this time, but she likes to paint, and I can see her interest in art awakening to a new light. My sons are very hyper and explorative like me. There are plenty of things to do in this town and all of Italy that would keep them busy. They are both into music, and i can just imagine them sitting and playing their guitars and singing in the squares. They probably wouldn’t set out a container for money, but purely entertain for fun and the enjoyment of the gifts that they have. I can see us doing things together that just are not available to us where we live now like attending the opera or ballet. None of my children or my husband have had this opportunity before other than my oldest son having the privilege of singing with his high school choir at Carnegie Hall in New York City. I would absolutely love to live here with my family in Firenze, Italy from what I have seen in my short stay. I have been told that there are so many more treasures here to find. However, right now we still have more at home that we have not seen and done either, Kentucky is the place that God has us living in for now. If He ever gives us the opportunity to relocate, I would highly push for this beautiful city
From what I have learned about families in Firenze, I feel that families are pretty much the same as in America except for the problems with illegal drug use and abuse. Moving to a place where it is not seen and strictly controlled would be a huge improvement in my opinion. But, I must be careful to remember that the grass is not always greener on the other side, and God has purpose for me back at home dealing with this "so called “epidemic. It has been a very refreshing time here in Italy, and I will strive to return here if the Lord wills me to do so.
