Ciao! I can't believe it's been a week sense I hopped on a plane to Italy. I have already made so many amazing memories and I can't wait to make so many more in the next two weeks that I'll be in Florence. My Italian is getting a little better each day, this morning we all went to the bar and I was able to order my breakfast in Italian. I have also been lucky enough to be in Italy during men's fashion week and was able to attend a fashion show. My appreciation for art is continuing to grow the more I get to see the paintings up close and learn about the history behind them.
The Fashion Show Yesterday I attended my first fashion show, if you don’t count the American girl doll one I went to when I was ten. The fashion show was called concept Korea at Pitti Immagine Uomo 93. The goal of the show is to spread Korea’s fashion culture throughout other countries. I was surprised the show wasn't longer, the show included two different brands and was split into two parts that each lasted about ten minutes. I could see fine the
whole show from my seat however I wasn't in a great spot to take pictures so included some of the professional shots taken at the show as a reference.
Most of what I know about the fashion industry comes from watching America Next Top Model or the devil wears Prada, so I'm pretty much an expert on the topic. Even though I had never heard of the designers and I didn’t really understand the clothes it was honestly one of the most exciting things I had ever done. The whole vibe of the room with the music and being surrounded by cool but serious looking people gave me the same rush as being on a roller coaster.
I personally didn’t think most of the clothes would not be practical to wear but they were fun to look at. Mrs. Kipp pointed out that many fashion shows are often a way for the designers to show off their work and the clothes aren’t necessarily supposed to be worn out on the street the same way the model is dressed in the show. I never thought of an fashion show as a type of art show but that’s exactly what
it is.
The first part of the fashion show was a brand called BMUET(TE). At first I didn’t like any of the designs because all of clothes were in weird shapes or the models were wearing the clothes in unconventional way but I liked their slogan “weird but beautiful.” When I got back to my apartment that night I was looking through the folder that was given out at the show and I read the concept for BMUET(TE) which basically said that there is beauty in the unexpected. This gave me a new appreciation for the clothes however I still preferred the second part of the show.
The second brand was called Beyond Closet and the collection was called "Beautful B People". Visually I thought this show was much more fun and had more pieces I could see people wearing. I’m a big movie fan and many of the outfits looked like something I would see in a Wes Anderson movie because of the bright colors and mix between preppy and sporty. Then I looked at the concept that mentions Wes Anderson as an influence in the collection.
Although I don’t expect to see anyone walking down the street back in Kentucky wearing something straight off this runway I can see how some of the styles might influence future clothing styles. Puffy sleeves were used several times in the show and I could see that working it’s way into mainstream style. I think a lot of these pieces from the show could trickle down to department stores.
Insituto degil Innocenti Today we toured Isituto degil Innocenti which was an orphanage that started in the beginning of the 15th century. Children, mostly babies, could be dropped off at the orphanage by parents of all different social classes (upper and lower). Most of the infants were usually female because it was too expensive for a family to support them and they could not afford a dowry to marry them off. The orphanage would care for them as infants then teach them a skill they could use to be able to support themselves. In the bottom flour of the building was a collection of trinket that parents had left with the children as a momentum of their family. It's sad to think that these children were dropped off on the steps of this building but encouraging to know that they were well taken care of and learned to make it on their own.
Strozzi Museum We also went to the Strozzi museum with a smaller group. We did the family package so we were able to do a lot of fun activities while we were going through the museum. The activities in the family pack were designed to help children stay engaged and learn to appreciate art. I found the activities very fun and I think they should be offered at more museums to keep children engaged and bond the family. We drew a copy of Michelangelo's statue, did our best impression of different people in the paintings, and worked on our fruit sketching skills.
