Yesterday I went the “Concept Korea” fashion show which was also my first ever fashion show! When we walked into the showroom, I was blown away. Everyone in the room had been invited to this show by the designers so they were people like fashion bloggers or even other designers. I felt like the Kardashians could walk in any minute, it was amazing! I am not an ADM meager and I haven’t had any of the needed apparel design marketing courses for my Family Consumer Science major so I don’t know the proper terms to use when describing the clothes I saw in both parts of the shows. But I will do my best!
I thought that there were some similarities in the outfits from both parts of the show. For example, I noticed that every outfit had very long sleeves that either stopped at the fingertips or continued well beyond their hands and everything was loose fitted. I also noticed defined shoulder pads on almost every jacket it top that the models were wearing. There were also a lot of ruffles/layers in each of the sections of the show as well as the use of very neutral colors. The
second show did have a few different colors than the first such as a dark mustard yellow or touches of green and pink in the patterns of the tops.
I am from Georgetown, which is a relatively small town, and cannot imagine anyone wearing any of the clothes I saw on the models. Now on the other hand, I also have my family who lives in Louisville and could see people from there wearing some of the clothes from the second section of show. I am very thankful for the opportunity to attend this fashion show and would love to go to another once I have taken an ADM course because I think I would appreciate it even more! It’s definitely something I will be looking out for.
Today I went on a tour of the Instituto degli Inocenti which was an orphanage first used in the fifteenth century, devoted to Saint Mary of the Innocents. Mrs Elizabeth Butler took us on a tour where she talked to us about the history and development of the institution. Filippo Brunelleschi designed the layout of the building and even the convent that is directly across the square. The front of
the institution has circle emblems of a swaddled infant in between each of the arches. This was used as a way to symbolize that they would take in children and provide them with a caring environment.
Elizabeth explained that the mother would walk through the front door and see a life-sized manger scene with Mary and Joseph kneeling next to an empty cradle. The mother would then lay the child in the cradle and ring the bell that would then rotate the cradle through an opened window where the nurses would register the child. They would record the date and time the child was left, how old, how much they weighed, and what they looked like. Most of these records are in the archives today! Elizabeth also explained how most times the mother would leave a necklace, bracelet, half a coin, or even a piece of cloth as a way for the child to remember them. She then took us to an exhibit that had a wall full of little cubbies with a name on each door, when you opened the door you could pull a drawer out that contained the child’s token their parent had left for them.
As we walked through the remainder of the institution, we saw several different artifacts that would have been on the walls of the orphanage. Elizabeth told us that the nurses would teach the children trades and even set up a dowry fund for when they were of age to be married. Once the children were old enough they would decide if they would join the convent (become a nun), work a job with the trade they learned, or they would be married off. Most families who gave their children to the orphanage were of lower class but there were some wealthy families who also did this. When we asked Elizabeth why a rich family would give up their child she explained that they would typically do that if they became pregnant out of wedlock.
I have learned so much during the short time I have been here and cannot wait to see what else I discover while on this trip. The city of Florence continuously surprises me and makes me fall deeper in love with this amazing culture. I am having the time of my life!
My steps for Wednesday was 18,659 and for Thursday it was 13,311.
