We went for a final walk...this is where dad lived before he came to Australia. Wednesday 17th September
Licodia - Vizzini
Zia Vincenzia’s son-in-law Guiseppe, invited Kurt, Joshua and my Dad to go fishing in Lago Licodia. So first thing Wednesday, they were up ready to go and Katelyn couldn’t make up her mind whether to go fishing or go shopping at the market with me. She was worried about the road and thought the market would be the same size as Licodia’s market.
Just as they drive off, I found out the market at Vizzini is huge!!
poor Katelyn!
Angela drove my Mum, Zia Mimmi and me to Vizzini. The market was great with lots of produce and small goods (Boring!) and loads of shoe, bags, jewellery and clothes stands (yeah!) The only problem was space in my suitcase!! I had none!!
Although I was planning to ship 10kg to Australia, that just meant we would be able to carry the suitcases without having a hernia!!It didn’t mean I had heaps of space. So I only bought essential items……2 pairs of shoes (for Katelyn and me), 2 tops (Katelyn and me), and bracelet (I’m sure it’s the travel sickness kind!). I felt bad for poor Joshua so he got a

Walking the streets laser light gizmo thing I’d seen him admiring.
Something for Kurt?! For god’s sake….we’re travelling light!! Essential items only!
Zia Mimmi needed a break from walking so she shouted us a cappuccino. Very different from our idea of a cappuccino!
We had to race back to Licodia because Kurt had planned to Skype Claudette and Rohan who would have just arrived back from Europe. I was running very late so we skyped Claudette again. It was great chatting to her and hearing that she’d finally put on a few kilos!! I’ve know her for a few decades and she doesn’t ever put on weight!! So by hearing that she too had gained weight, made my day in Licodia. Thanks Claudette!! But she’s better not lose it before I get back!!
Kurt had a sleep and I went with the kids and my parents to the Zio Nuzio’s other home that’s he’s fixing up. Then we went to his daughter Giovanna’s new house. It looked so deceiving small from the outside but once inside we were amazed at the amount of space she had. We had dinner arrangements with Guiseppe and Enza and partners for dinner.

The Church below the castle We arrived at Guiseppe and Enza’s house and found Enza ad Jan Marco waiting with Enza’s parents. We had a chat and thought we use this visit to say good bye, not knowing if we’d get the chance to say goodbye on Thursday. I thanked them very much for virtually adopting Kurt for the past 11 days. Both parents spoke about our next visit and were adamant about us staying with them next time!!
As we got up to say goodbye I was sadden to see tears in Giovanna’s eyes and it caused Kurt and I to start choking! She just shook her head and hugged me. We hugged, kissed and I just walked out. I knew it was the beginning of the goodbyes.
Now I understand why my grandmother 20 years ago said that leaving was the worst part of any family holiday, at her age she didn’t know if she’d see her sisters and brother again.
Before ending up at Enza’s house, Kurt and I had gone past the local pizzeria and told them to only accept payment from us at the end of that night - not our cousins, so when our cousins told

This is the location where Mum lived before heading to Australia us to get into car as we were driving to another pizzeria outside of Licodia, we thought, damn!! Kurt had been trying to pay for Guiseppe and Enza’s coffee, pizza anything he could.
We ended up in Cartigirone at their local pizza place but when we got there….it was closed!!! So we swapped cars and went to their next pizza place. But Sofia led Guiseppe to the wrong pizza but eventually we got there!!
It was late when we got our meals, and I was feeling sick with hunger. We ordered crepes, foccia - style meals and some beers. We spoke about Octoberfeast in Germany and organised a catch up with the boys!!
It was a great night! It got even better when Kurt casually went to the counter downstairs and paid the meal!!
At the end of the night, when they went down to pay, my cousins were horrified to find out that the bill had been paid! They were amazed that the owner let Kurt pay!
Outside Zia Vincenzia’s house, we all got outside our cars and spoke in hushed tones. I think we were all trying to put off the goodbyes and decided we’d
see each other the following day. It felt better saying “Ci vediamo” “we’ll see you!” instead of Goodbye!
