A Sicilian Caretto. Sunday 14th September
Licodia - Marzarone’s Festa D’Uva
Sunday morning did not bring good stuff for us!!
My Mum and I both woke up with the runs and later I threw up!! My Dad also had a throwing up marathon. But Kurt had had the runs for a few days. My Zia Mimmi from Switzerland had also been sick a few days earlier. So while we thought we’d over-eaten big time, we may simply have been a little run down and therefore very susceptible to the virus roaming around Licodia.
Boy did we feel bad!! For breakfast, I could only manage hot water and a slice of plain toast and I took a long time eating that. I don’t know how my parents were but when I saw them later, they looked BAD!!
We spent the morning doing as little as possible and Kurt went to Giuseppe’s house to use the internet.
For lunch Zia Vincenzia took pity on us and we had a simple lunch…sort of! Salad with a creamy dressing and macroni with mince and cheese!! I ate a tiny amount and very slowly.
After lunch I slept but still felt
sick. Angela and Giuseppe picked us up to show us the Festival of the Grapes, in Marzarone a town 20 minutes from Licodia. The drive there made me feel ill, but I knew it wasn’t the drive. The only thing that made me feel slightly better was seeing my Dad, who I knew felt even worse than me!! Everything about him looked ill!!
It rained in the morning and it looked like it was going to rain even before the festive started.
We’d gone specifically to see the Sicilian Carts and they were very cute. We had a photo taken and while we were having it taken, the horse next to me started to give me a little kiss!! When we saw the photo, our expressions were very funny. But my Dad’s expression was even funnier because while we looked happy he looked like he was at a funeral!!Given a choice I don’t think he’d have left home but Angela and Giuseppe were adamant about showing us this town’s festival.
We walked around and saw a lot of stands selling food, jewellery, shoes, clothes, lawn mower, photography and anything imaginable. I think if we’d been feeling better

A Gelati... we’d have enjoyed the festive so much more as there was so much to see and do!!
They’d even used heaps of red and white grapes to make a very Sicilian 200mt banner. They even had a carnival section of rides for the kids.
We left my Dad sitting on a seat in the city centre while we walked around. We said we’d back in 30 minutes but when 2 hours later we returned and he didn’t look very happy. If anything he looked even sicker than before!!! It had gotten colder since we left but we’d been shopping and distracted. My Dad however, had sat there and continued to sit there as it got colder and colder. The fact that he’d been feeling sick with nausea and the runs didn’t make him feel any better.
When got back to Zio Nunzio house and had a light dinner. My Dad and I had a peach and small a piece of toast and I ate very, very slowly. It was boarder line weather any food would make a reappearance!! My Dad looked terrible and went to bed early that night
Monday 15th September
Licodia
Monday was
thankfully a very quiet and slightly uneventful day.
We had a nice breakfast with Zia Vincenzia. Actually all our breakfasts were lovely. It was like being at a Bed and Breakfast!! Breakfast was always beautifully laid out with cup, saucers, matching plates and an assortment of spreads from around the world!! Coffee from Switzerland, Jams from Italy and Vegimite from Australian.
Once again, Kurt went to spend some time at Giuseppe and Enza’s house to continue uploading his photos. Boy does Kurt take a lot photos!! It’s almost a full time job!
My Mum and I started seriously thinking about sending a parcel home with all our Summer clothes because since the rain in Licodia, the temperature had dropped about 10’. Kurt checked the weather in Egypt and for January, maximum was 20 minimum was 9. So singlet tops, shorts and light summer dresses could all be sent home.
After a light lunch, we visited some of my Dad’s cousins Josie and Carmello. They had some Australian, who my Dad grew up with, also visiting. It was nice, but I ‘d wished Kurt had been there because Albert and Josie had driven through Prague and thought it

Grape display... was one of the most beautiful cities they’d ever seen. He’d have loved an afternoon speaking English. Josie’s mother was also there but I found it really sad to talk to this old little frail woman and desperately look for some resemblance to my grandmother who died when I was five, but I still have distinct memories of.
I remembered my grandmother to be a tall, strong and solid woman and I saw none of her in Josie’s mum. As we left, she cried and spoke of the importance of family and loving one another. I swear to God, it’s all the little old widows that reduce me to a blubbering teary mess.
I was a bit worried about Kurt because he was expecting to collect him from Giuseppe’s house after 5.00pm and it was now 7.00pm. He had no keys for Zia Vincenzia’s house, no mobile and limited Italian!! Eventually I found him outside Anna Maria’s house chatting to one of my Dad’s cousins. What the hell could he have been chatting about? How the hell was he chatting?
Anyway after Josie’s house we raced to Phillipe and Anna Maria’s house for his specialty pizza. He’d
made enough pizza for the whole of Licodia and invited the whole family!! He also made some home made bread, which AnnaMaria split open, generously drizzled with olive oil and layers cheese and ham. Yum! My thighs thought it was Christmas….bring on the fat!!
There was so much pizza and it was honestly the best pizza we’d tasted in Italy. There was just so much of it!!
Phillipe’s son Giuseppe (another one!) put some movies on his computer for the kids and they enjoyed watching a Mickey Mouse movie in Italian!!
As I was looking AnnaMaria’s wedding album, Katelyn came and sat next to me and I realised she’d developed a fever. So I went home and frantically searched for some Panadol, although everyone offered me some of their household medication.
We went to bed early and thankfully Katelyn slept thru the night.
