We arrived on the outskirts of Milan yesterday, a fairly easy run with some spectacular scenery and miles of twisty roads and hair pin bends, Ollie loved it, Woolly and I weren’t so impressed. First job of the day was a trip to the airport to collect daughter Zoe, having told her to book a flight to Milan what we had counted on was the airport was at Bermango, a 45 minute trip!
Woolly says – forty five minutes shouldn’t be a problem, well it wasn’t except for the stand still traffic. We sat in jams for what seemed like a week and with the clock ticking we were getting more worried about being there on time for the flight. As the traffic cleared Ollie went for it and we flew into a parking space just as her flight landed. Hugs, tears and kisses followed before we piled an exhausted Zoe into the car and headed back to City Camping Milano. The site is classed as the nearest to the city centre and appears to be a major storage area for motorhomes, Georgie would have been well at home. The facilities are good but basic but the bar
is close and there is a waterpark next door, shame we don’t have time to pay it a visit!
Ian and Ollie had voted to stay and have a quiet day at base camp while Woolly, Zoe and I caught a bus and then the underground, costing 3 Euros each (approximately £2.45 GBP)…..
Woolly says – I had voted to stay at camp too, but apparently I needed to go shopping! The bus was hot and the underground hotter but climbing up the steps to the outside world it had been worth it. We had found the cathedral and it was awesome, intricately decorated with the saints and gargoyles it was a stunning piece of architecture. A drink was needed so spying a McDonalds we spent the next 10 minutes queuing and dripping waited to be served, finally cokes and fries all round we fled to the main square and sat gazing in awe at the Duomo. Begun in 1386 by Visconti, the Gothic monument wasn’t fully completed until 1805 when Napoleon made it known that he wanted it finished.
Our plan was to visit the Duomo before finding the Golden
triangle, the fashion mecca of Milan. The first problem was getting into the cathedral. Neither Zoe or I had covered shoulders or legs, Woolly was fine with his Monaco top but for us it was no go. A shame but we had spotted the Via Montenapolene. Rebuilt in the neoclassic period it is the most luxurious street in Milan.
Woolly says – it was beautiful, with paintings, and high domed ceilings it was almost worth going shopping to see it. We popped into Prada, but felt a bit out of place with the elegant staff and doorman, with each bag on a single shelf we were too afraid to even ask the price. Leaving the grandeur behind we found ourselves outside the Leonardo De Vinci museum, it wasn’t cheap at 23 Euros for us all (approximately £20.80 GBP) it was a fascinating place, showing wooden models of his work it was amazing. I loved his flying machine, he was so ahead of the world considering he drew this blue print in 1482! There were loads of interactive computers where we could build the machines on screen as well as finding out de Vinci’s thoughts and plans for
his drawings, it was really good. One room was dedicated to his art work and explained how the paintings had been restored, the Last Supper is only 50% of what it would have really been!
Before Woolly started planning his own rocket we headed out into the sunshine and found our way to the Fashion World of Milan.
Woolly says – there was Gucci, Cartier, Channel, Prada to name a few, we braved the doorman at Armani and oohed and arred over the products and keel over at the prices. Jo was terrified when the assistant offered her a handbag to hold even more so when she found out it was a mere £1250 Euros, Zoe and I chuckled, it didn’t really go with her shorts so we left the bag behind. More and more shops appeared, I was starting to flag! Zara saw the purses coming out for a top and some perfume, I begged for an ice cream and we had the most scrumptious cones ever. I had to help Jo with her raspberry but Zoe seemed to manage her chocolate chip with ease. Shopped out and boiling hot we staggered back
to the underground and the journey back to the site, it was sweaty and crowded and getting off was the best bit of the journey. Ollie had been for a shower in our absence and looks very spruce, Ian had relaxed and enjoyed the sun and was ready for the evening, I’m ready for bed!
