Eating the Prickly pear we worked so hard to get.... Friday 5th September
Nova Siri…….Castro Bolito
Today was a lazy day!! I love those days!!
We had some food stuff that we wanted to use up, so before heading off to the beach we cooked some sauce for lunch and a casserole for dinner.
As part of the price for the accommodation, we were given a lounge chair, a beach chair and umbrella. The kids went canoeing, first with us and then on their own. Since they had their own lifejackets I wasn’t overly concerned. Actually Kurt was supervising them from a distance of 20 metres in his own canoe. I don’t know how that was supposed to work!
When I tried to help the kids move away from the shore with their canoes, I often fell on the rocks because the tide was so strong and it was so difficult to stand on the rocks and balance. Of course wouldn’t you guess it, my Mum comes along and takes photos of us looking graceful as ever.
Katelyn was dragging her canoe out of the water and struggling to tip the water out of it, when two girls came along and helped her. That was it!!
My daughter now thinks she speaks Italian so well and so fluently that she’ll accidently speak it at school. She said she almost wrote an Italian word in her journal. I don’t know about that…..
Anyway, it was so cute watching her expressions and gestures as these three girls tired to communicate. She looked frustrated, stumped and finally thrilled when the two girls understood what she’d tried so long to explain.
I think she started to stalk these girls so she could talk to them…..
They all met up at the pool (once it opened) and splashed around the pool and their mother was amazed that Katelyn wasn’t wearing a cap to protect her hair and avoid having to wash it. The girls struggled to ask Katelyn something so finally they approached me and asked if Katelyn was going to come to the dance tonight. I had no idea what dance she was referring to. At this caravan park, in the evening at 9.00pm!!!! the toddlers perform a little routine for the people, followed by a group activity and them a kids dance which started at 11.00pm. I couldn’t believe it.11.00pm!!!!
So we arrived at 9.00pm
tired and ready for sleep and on stage were three gorgeous little girls ready to start their performance. In front of the audience there were a few stage mothers dancing and singing along with their children. We realised very quickly how underdressed we were!!! I still had on my bikini and the same sundress I’d wore to the beach earlier that day, my Mum hadn’t changed and my Dad had taken off his shirt and wore only his singlet. Oh My God!! People had heels, makeup, hair beautifully groomed. We looked like the poor cousins from the wrong side of the track. There was even a woman with glitter in her hair and a strappy top that had a diamante feature. It was unreal.
Later they played a game of crosswords and broke the group into two. My parent and I were on opposing teams and were of no help to either!! The questions were about old and modern day singers, politician and actors - all italian!! The questions and answers were all in italian!!!How the hell was I supposed to have any chance? Kurt thought I was a disgrace but wait til I get him in India, playing
Nova Siri
finally....Got Maria in the Kitchen.... a game in Hindi about Indian stars and high profile Indians!!!
We were only able to help with one question which they asked in English to make it easier, but the guys’ accent was so thick it would have make more sense in italian. The question was about Star Wars and were had no idea what the question was asking until we heard the opposing team answer with a girl’s name. Kurt said “Princess Lea?”
And we won!!! They cheered and clapped for us and then said in Italian, “about time the American helped us!”
After that there was a dance where everyone copied the girl on stage doing the steps. It looked fun and the music was great so unlike Kurt, my Mum (although my Mum did try to join in but it became more complicated) and the kids who just watched, I joined in and had a great time making a fool of myself in Italy trying to keep step to Italian music.
We went to bed after midnight and thought we’d had a great day!
