Lake Balaton is known to the mighty Magyars as the Hungarian Sea. All I saw was people desperate for a coastline and only a 12 hour drive from the nearest real ocean. I was told there were beaches. There were, but they were all grass...not a grain of sand to be found. I was told there are parties. In reality, it was half the high school population of Hungary age 13-16 getting wasted. I have to give them credit though. At 4 in the morning, the streets were still packed. As were the arcades.... read more

Woke up to a cloudy sky but still pretty hot. We were invited over to our Austrian neighbours to show as a snake slithering it was along the ground, just the ticket, we were on high alert of snakes during the day. The sun came out with intense heat, and we dipped in the lake, matt was kindly told he could borrow a windsurfer from a Hungarian couple staying at the campsite, and he pottered around the lake, then later trying his hand at fishing. We have been pretty inundated with campers coming up to the van and steering at the number plates and asking us were are from, word got around camp as a lot of people came up to us and started talking about NZ . The Hungarian man who’s windsurfer matt is using ... read more

Leaving the hotel we made our way to campsite not far about a forty minute drive on the side of Lake Balaton. The area is stunning the lake is shalow and very murky , but everyone seems to get in and enjoy it. We discovered the lake had in house snakes , which only eat mossies for dinner , i made a decision not to hang around too long in the lake . We cilled out in the sun , meet the neighbours and enjoyed a day swimming , reading.... read more

We left Slovenia driving through Austria into Hungary. It was a pretty long day, arriving on the shores of Lake Balaton in Hungry a very beautiful lake were tourists flock to. We decided to go for a hotel break and found a great one on the shores of the Lake. We enjoyed a night of pampering, spa, sauna, pool and a room slightly bigger than that of the camper with a bathroom attached. We walked to a local restaurant to taste the local dishes and headed back to the hotel with extremely full tummies.... read more

After arriving in another new city late on a Saturday afternoon, it was decided that Sunday would be put aside for sightseeing. As luck would have it, Sunday also turned out to be St. Stephens Day, a big national festival here in Hungary. St. Stephen was the first king of Hungary ruling from 997-1038. He turned the nomadic pagan tribes into an independent nation largely by converting everyone to the church. He was made a saint on Aug 20 1083 (hence the date of the holiday) after some miracles occured at his gravesite. When he was removed from his original grave, his right hand was found intact and now the people follow the hand in a procession each year through the city (although presumably the hand is carried by someone and doesn't trot around by itself!!) ... read more

Valeu a pena!!!... read more
