Day 5
Well, today was a driving day and it was pretty rough. Over mountains, through blinding rain and against strong winds.
We left Salzburg early and drove for 8 hours, although that includes
many leisurely stops for sightseeing, photos and lunch. Most of the
driving was spent in Austria and we decided it is to Germany what
Nebraska is to Colorado! 😉
When we crossed into Hungary they pulled us over because we didn't have a "vignette" which is a toll payment for each country you go to. The fine was $150!!!!! That's a hard lesson!
We finally made it and put our grumpy, we don't have $150 faces away
and checked into our hotel. Unfortunately, in the time it took us to
take our bags up to the room, we got a parking ticket!
So, we moved the car to a parking garage, ate dinner, saw a man
walking his HUGE cat with a leash, bought some laundry detergent and
pudding and now it's lights out! xoxo
Day 6
Typically, we start our day with coffee and pastries. Today we were feeling
adventurous and ordered french toast at a little
cafe near the hotel. It
was bread fried in oil served with cheese and tomatoes and it was so
disgusting we couldn't eat one bite! But we felt guilty about it so we got a
really big laugh out of it. So, we walked down the street and had coffee
and pastries.
The metro took us a short way to the Kerepesi Cemetery and we spent
hours and hours wandering the beautiful rows taking beautiful pictures
of beautiful graves. It was really amazing, full of sad weeping statues.
The whole back section was tucked in and overgrown which felt very
mysterious and exciting!
After a quick stop for photos along the Danube river we were
starving and walked forever to find a place to eat. We have had a hard
time finding the pockets of restaurants here and ended up back by our
hotel for dinner and beer.
At every meal we're amazed at how bland the food is, the menu
descriptions are detailed but misleading. We are incredibly homesick for Germany in every way, it has gemütlichkeit (coziness)!!!
Hungary is
sort of a cross between Soviet-era Russia and Berlin. Lots of history,
lots of dour faces, lots of places to drink and forget something, but
not as beautiful/cool/whatever as advertised. It feels gray here and the
history of Hungary is rather sad. They have a saying "we take our
pleasure sadly". That strikes us as being unfortunately appropriate and
true, they really seem to.
One more day in Budapest and we're going to keep our spirits up by
shopping. Hungarian spices, clothes, jewelry and presents...we hope!
Day 7
The Great Market Hall was big and full of places to buy meat, cheese,
vegetables, fruit, spices, hand embroidered clothes and lace. It was
also full of touristy over priced junk. Marleah got a couple peasant
blouses and John got sweet and hot paprika.
After, we wandered the streets taking pictures of buildings and
tried to have a slow and relaxing day. We are so wiped out and tired
from walking so much every day, trying to fit everything in. Maybe we
need to save a little up for the next two weeks!
