23 May Woke to a foggy morning and had a late breakfast at the pension. Took the the bus to Thira and walked around the amazing terraces overlooking the caldera. A huge volcanic eruption eons ago created the Santorini of today with its dramatic sea cliffs overlooking the sea to the outer islands, which were once all part of the mainland. We then set off on a hike to Oia, about 11 km, very scenic, had a late lunch at a taverna en route, stuffed potatoes and zucchini fritters. Golly this Greek food is good!! Got to Oia about
6pm, a good walk, quite a lot of hills and scoria, magnificent views over the caldera. Had a rest, then walked up to Oia to see the sunset at the end of the peninsula, along with what seemed like 1000 other people, including a wedding party! Where did they all appear from? Great views on both sides of the peninsula. Walked back for dinner at Taverna Moy near us, another great local meal (giant beans in tomato sauce and chicken souvlaki in bacon). There was a great 3 piece bouzouki band playing and an atmosphere to match. We were both very tired, it
had been a big day out, must remember to take it easy, not too much walking!
23 May Today we plucked up courage and hired a quad bike, which turned out to be a lot of fun, and only 25€ for the day! It was a great way to get around the island, which is pretty small. Was very windy though, quite scary at times, and very cold in the afternoon on the bike. Quite a lot to see on the island, including the southern tip and lighthouse, Santos winery, Red and Black beaches, an old traditional village and the buried village of ancient Akothira, an amazing archaeological site. Like EphAnother cool day on a special island. Had dinner at Taverna Moy, another chance to enjoy the music while we ate good country style food.
May 25Took a boat trip to out to see the volcanic crater, and walked up to the top. Great views over to the main island. The boat was very full, even though it was still officially shoulder tourist season. Route back was via a thermal swimming area in the sea, then for lunch at a small fishing village ( with very large prawns on the menu!)
Off to catch the ferry to Crete, so picked up our bags at the pension and waited for the bus which didn't come! luckily we managed to crib a ride from a shuttle waiting for other people next door! Took the fast ferry across to Crete, just a 2 hour trip! Got into Heraklion about 8 and walked around to find a hotel, a bit expensive for our budget but a nice seafront room on 4th floor at Kronos, 60€ a night. Went out for supper nearby, love the Greek Islands tradition of finishing your meal with complementary raki! Next episode - Crete!
PS So hard to choose the photos for this blog, there were so many good ones, it is such a photogenic place!
