Another hot spot crossed off for us ladies… we have just spent the last week in Greece. What a beautiful place! We arrived in Athens and stayed the night in a bit of a dodge area but that was only until we got the ferry across to Santorini Island the next day. What a trip that was, 8 hours it took us to get there. We started out with the cheap tickets which get you on the deck but after being crammed on top, with un comfy seats and dirty smokers huddled all round us we decided to upgrade to the inside air seats, pretty much like a plane but way more leg room! Slept most of the way which was good and now here we are doing it all over again to get back…
Anyway our first stop was Santorini one of the top islands we have been told to visit, and for good reason the place was stunning! Just like looking at a post card or those paintings you see of all those white buildings with blue roof tops. We met some Canadians on the bus on our way up to the Hostel so we made friends and spent
most of the time site seeing with them. Our first day there mainly consisted of getting the ferry so that arvo we just chilled out and hit the beach down the road from our Hostel. We stayed at Hostel Anna for anyone thinking of going, very cool place to stay, cheap, clean and heaps of aussies and pretty close to the essentials like the beach and one of the best bakeries in Greece which is also open 24 hour! Don’t ask me why cause the town wasn’t exactly packed out so I cant really see the demand for baked goods being that essential but hey I didn’t complain.
Nic was due to arrive on the Wednesday so once she arrived we headed out with Danielle & Steve (The Canadians) and hired some quad bikes to go check out the sites of the island. First off we stopped at Red Beach and had a dip then we rode to Fira and Oia which are the two main towns of Santorini but located more up North about 30-40 mins on the quads. Oia is the town where a lot of the paintings are done of Greece as you can see from the
photos…Gorgeous! I’m not usually one for sunsets but watching if from there was pretty spectacular! People pack out there just to see it, we scored a sweet spot on top of someone’s roof and watched. Apparently peak season is even more chaotic!
That night we had some drinks down stairs with a mass group of Aussies lots of drinking games and learnt some new ones as well. The night got blurry very quickly after me and Nic polished off 3 1 litre bottles of cheap red wine in a few hours, but good times were defiantly had! Not so much the next day when we had booked to go on a day trip on a boat to see a volcano and some hot springs, really not what I felt like doing with a hang over. The trek up the volcano was an effort in itself let alone going on the boat and trying not to be sick over the edge! But once I had a nap on board for an hour between spots I eventually pulled through. The hot spring was more like ‘luke warm’ but still nice, the water in the ocean over there was so clear and blue
that you could see all the way to the bottom in most spots. From there we sailed across to a smaller Island for 2 hours of free time, for us it meant, food, beer and tanning time. Tanning proved a little uncomfortable being that the beaches there were all rocks. From there we then sailed up to Oia to watch the sun set again and have some dinner.
Next day was our last before we headed to the next Island of Ios, so that night was a quiet one. The ferry was only 45 mins from Santorini to Ios so that was a relief. We had herd nothing but good things about Ios from the other people we had met, known as one of the party islands and definitely lived up to its reputation! Greece is just out of the peak season which apparently meant it was pretty much 97% Aussies which was good fun. Another gorgeous Island but not as much to during the day except beach it. We mainly just did lots of drinking and sleeping! We stayed at Francesco’s Hostel up in the centre of town, and a 2 min bus ride from the beach. You can
walk, but I wouldn’t recommend it especially having to come back up the massive hills in the heat. But again if anyone is thinking of going would most def recommend this Hostel, the owners are lovely and super helpful. Had one of the best views over looking town and the water and a bar! Breakfast runs from 9am till 2pm which worked well for us, and if you were lucky you even got a shot of schnapps with your breakfast. Ios has siesta between 4pm & 6pm which was seemed like a good thing at the time, but then when you wanted a water or something to eat you were buggered cause pretty much everything shut down. We spent our days down the beach and the nights drinking with the mass herd of Aussies from Perth, Sydney & Melbourne. We had a great crew of people, made a lot of mates. We were discussing that none of us was yet to meet anyone from Tassie on our travels, then someone bought up a good point of that even if you were from there, would you really admit to it? Classic! Sorry to any Tassie people reading this…
There are a
mass amount of small bars in Ios which made pub hoping easy but if you lost anyone, nearly impossible to find again. Which a couple of the guys found out over the few nights we were there. Nothing gets started till mid night which made pre drinking from the normal time of 6-7pm quiet a task to make it till mid night! We hit a few of the local bars one place even had GIANT JENGA! So much fun!
Our trip to Ios was cut short today as we had some problems getting from Athens to Croatia which was meant to be our next stop before Germany. It was nearly impossible to get there without having to travel for 2-3 days straight or book an expensive flight. So we had to change destinations so were now on our way to Turkey instead. Wasn’t even a destination we were planning to visit at first but again along our travels we have herd a lot of good things from other people and it’s also its meant to be dirt cheap which is what we like to hear. So we fly out tomorrow morning from Athens to Turkey and spend 4 days there
then head up to Munich for the last part of our trip.
So that brings us up to date for now will keep you all posted from Turkey.
Yamas! (Cheers in Greek)
