The beginning of our trip was a bit of a mission covering most modes of transport. We were up at 4 am and got a taxi out to heathrow for our flight to greece. Four hours later we then caught a train for an hour out to the old port on the opposite side of athens. We struggled to find what ferry we needed to catch and after asking at information they got some streert bum to direct us over to a ferry company. We then faced a 4 hour boat trip out to Mykonos followed by another car ride to our camping ground.
Mykonos is the biggest party island so at 11pm after we had settled in we headed straight over to 'super paradise beach' for a ministry of sound dance party.
Our camping ground was right on the beach front so day one consisted of snokeling and charring ourselves into a crisp. There were also quite a few nudists some rather scary as they had managed to reduce themselves into boot leather straps.
Day two was spent sightseeing and we checked out the famous windmills and had the first of many cocktails while watching the sun
set.
We next headed over to Paros and managed to get two roof top apartments for 10 Euro each a night. Paros is a more auhentic Greek island and we really started to relax here. We rented scooters for a day and cruised around the whole island stopping for swims at the beach and food.
After a couple of days of doing not much at all we then headed over to Ios another island known for its parties.
When in the greek islands you dont usually arrange for accomodation before you get there. Once you get off the ferry you are usually met by 30 plus screaming greeks waving pictures of their apparments and trying to bargin with you the best deal. Rachel and Clark recognised one guy that they had stayed with before and got a fantstic deal for 12.50 euro a night each for our rooms. We thought this a bargin already until we headed up the hill and saw our hotel. It was right inbetween the town and the main beach right on the cliff front with a massive pool. We immeditaley set up shop by the pool bar and sat transfixed looking out
at the ocean.
We headed out that evening to check out the party scene only to discover that half the bars didnt open until 12am. A bit late for us wrinklies but we managed to stay up and had a few nice cocktails before we hit the big clubs. In ios they have people outside clubs trying to encourage you to come in by giving away free drinks and shots. (girls only) We got a few of these drinks and they pretty much tasted like petrol so we quickly gave up on the idea of having a massive night. We later read in the lonley planet guide that ios was known for its bootleg alcohol.
The next day was spent by the pool and beach and a great pub meal at a bar where they have a free movie on projected up onto one of the walls.
We were very sad to say goodbye to our amazing hotel in ios but were excited about heading over to Santorini! Our accomodation was not so flash but comfortable and close to town. There were alot of shops around although they were a bit commercial and for people with loads
of money. That didnt stop Matt from eyeing up a £1000 light fitting. He was so into it he kept going back every day just to look at and deciding on weather or not it would look good in the flat.
We hired a car the next day and drove around the island checking out the red, black and white sand beaches. Santorini used to be a massive volcano that blew apart 1000s of years ago. It is very steep and all the buildings are cut into the cliff face and hang over the water. The end of the day was spent in Ia a little town right on the tip of the island to watch the sunset. We had found a great possie to watch the sun go down when a huge group of contiki travellers showed up so we took off to find another spot. There were too many people around to find somewhere comfortable until we spied an abandoned building. We climbed up onto the roof got a few beers and watched our best sunset yet.
The next day we did a little walked down all 600 steps to the bottom of the island trying
not to step in donkey poop. We got in a pirate ship and went over the the old volcano and checked out the thermal springs. Our final night we brought some cheap bottles of the local drink uzo and had a great meal and drinks and checked out the nightlife.
We then said goodbye to the greek island with a 10 hour ferry ride back to athens. We had a great little room with bunks and a window and slept most of our way back finally feeling rested and relaxed.
