Lunch at Korinthos site
Greek salad, bread, water, complimentary wine, archaeological site beyond the terrace and Castle on top of the hill. Today was the first day with the rental car. It was not so bad driving out of Athens on a Sunday. Road signs are fairly straight-forward so that with a map and some common sense, we did ok. It was a long day of driving and it went from being chilly in Athens to pretty warm today. I think I am sunburned! 😞
First stop was the ancient Corinth archaelogical site. We stopped for lunch at a place overlooking the site and it was a great meal. They brought wine and we didn't even ask - I think I'm moving here 😉. The picture is our greek salad, the wine, bread and water - over looking the Ancient Corinth (Korinthos) archaelogical site with the castle way up there on top of the rock. We got free wine and a free proposition... but lets not get in to that story!! Everyone is REALLY friendly here in Greece!
The pictures to follow are the castle up on top of the hill and it was really amazing. I don't think the pictures do it justice. We climbed up and in to the castle and as I was trying to catch one of
Ancient Corinth archaelogical site
Archaeological site in foregrround and castle up on top of the hill/mountain. these shots, I put my hand down on a rock to steady and OUCH!!! I had some terrible stinging on my wrist!! I managed to lean on to stinging nettle - I was red, inflamed and blistered within 5 minutes. Blisters!!! I was a little worried at the strong reaction but not quite ready to turn away from the castle... but we did have to leave before we had a chance to climb to the top to Athena's temple because we had a long drive ahead of us and already we spent more time than we had planned. What a great castle. (And the nettle reaction went away within a few hours).
Next destination was Epidavrous and a few other sites. On the way we passed more castles on top of hills (mountains?) but we didn't have time to stop. We were looking for the ancient theater of Epidavrous and the spa and healing center of Asklepion. The drive was so absolutely beautiful along the coast - stunning views!! But we did get somewhat confused at one point and ended up at the small theater. The directions were not clear but we spotted a tour bus and thought "hmmm...."
so we followed it and sure enough, it got us in the right direction. The theater here is HUGE and full of school kids that demonstrated the excellent acoustics. The spa site did not leave much to see but the wildflowers growing in the ruins made it picturesque.
Next stop - find our way to Nafplion and from there to our final destination and hotel in the mountain town of Lagkadia. The drive had it's ups and downs... the roads were pretty narrow at times and often reminded me of Route 1 along the West coast. We were getting kind of bleary eyed at one point and found a cafe and ordered Greek coffee. The taste was wonderful but we also described it as "chewy" (there was sediment) but boy we were awake and peppy and chatty after that!! I think Sheryl called me a chipmunk...The pictures here are of random shots along the road - it was stunning and again, the pictures don't do it justice. We rolled in to town a bit late so no great pictures of the town hugging the mountain side until tomorrow. This town is interesting and cute and a little weird... or
maybe it was us?
Adventures of tomorrow include Olympia!!
