Heraklion, Crete

Greece

Heraklion, the largest city of Crete, was built in 824 and its original name was Chandax. The current name of the city comes from the homonymous Minoan settlement that existed there in ancient times. Heraklion is a very attractive destination nowadays. Two museums, the Archaeological Museum and the Historical Museum of Crete are worth visiting. In addition the archaeological site of Knossos is located very close to town, being one of the most important Greek archaeological sites. The Venetian fortress of the city is unique and worth a visit on its own at any time of day or night. You should not miss walking at the small narrow streets of the old town. Near Heraklion you will find many beautiful beaches to cool off in summertime, while there are various good options available for your entertainment as well. The local cuisine is famous across the world! You should trust Cretans on this !!
