On Monday the carnival festivities continued. It was "clean Monday," their 'kick-off' to Lent. So we had the typical meal for that day in a small town about a mile or so from Katalagari. The meal was mainly lentil soup, which I wasn't a huge fan of, but it was ok. And then a bunch of pickled veggies, like pickles (of course), carrots, peppers, cauliflower, and then a couple that I didn't know what they were. And there was also some really good bread which was really good dipped in the soup. And of course there was wine, because there is always wine with everything here. Then, after the main meal there was something that looked kinda like strawberry yogurt, so I ate it... It definitely wasn't... It was caviar, which was not good. It was super salty, and just not good at all. But I tried it 😊 Then, after the meal, we walked back to the hotel (our guide drove and on his way back, stopped and bought kites). Flying kites is a tradition on clean Monday, so we did that at the hotel. There wasn't too much wind in the yard of the hotel, so we walked a little ways up the hill by the hotel and flew them from there. That was actually really fun. One of the kites had a 100m line on it, and we got it all the way up there. It was really cool. The hotel kinda looks out over a valley so it was really neat that we could see many people flying kites all over the valley. It is cool that this tradition of flying kites on this day has continued for so long. We asked our guide why that was the tradition, and he didn't know. It was just the thing to do on clean Monday was to fly kites. So that was really neat to be a part of that. Then, yesterday we went to another museum. Not too much fun, because they are kinda monotonous, especially because this one was completely dedicated to Nikos Kazantzakis' life, and we have been to a couple museums like that. Then, after that we went to winery and learned how the wine was made there. It was a Boutari one, which there are four of them in Greece. One here, one in Santorini, and then two in northern Greece. We got a tour of the process of making the wine, and then we watched a little movie on the history of Crete, and then we got to taste two of the wines. They were both delicious. The red one was called Skalani and the white was Fantaxometicho. So that was an awesome class activity, wine tasting. Then, later last night we watched the movie "Zorba the Greek" another movie that is based on a book by Kazantzakis. This movie was actually really good though, I would definitely recommend it. Then, today we walked to a town called Archanes about 2 miles away. And some people climbed a mountain there. I didn't because my foot hurt (I don't know if I have written about this at all, but sometime last week I hurt my foot somehow, it's not that bad, but I think I just bruised it somehow. Hopefully it will get better soon because we are walking a lot here). And I just didn't think that climbing a mountain with rocks everywhere would be very good for it. So there were some of us who just walked around the town for a little while, and we went to a super market and got food for lunch, spaghetti ingredients, and went back to the hotel and cooked it. We actually have a kitchen in the rooms here at the hotel, so that was fun to cook, and it was nice because it was a cheap meal. Then, this afternoon we have just been hanging out. We leave Katalagari tomorrow for Rethymno, which is a pretty big city, about 30,000 or so. And it's supposed to have some of the best beaches on Crete, so that should be fun 😊
