Well on Monday we got to sleep in, which was amazing, before we got started seeing more sites. We went to a historical museum which was ok. It didn't really have anything that was super exciting, but it wasn't boring either, especially because Olin was telling us about everything there. One cool exhibit that was there was all about Nikos Kazanzakis. We are reading "Christ Recrucified" by him and then we are going to be watching "Zorba the Greek" and "The Last Temptation of Christ" which are both based on his novels. Then, after we went to that museum we went to a gorgeous church downtown Heraklion. The church was fairly new... I don't really know much about it because no one lectured to us about it (which was ok) so we just got to walk around it. Then we had some free time, but none of the shops were open because it was in the middle of the afternoon, so we just went back to the hotel and worked on homework. Nothing really exciting happened that night, we all just kinda hung out. Then on Tuesday we had another busy day of site seeing. First, we went to a church
called "Panagaia Kera" which was from the 12th century, so that was pretty neat. All of the icons in it were original and not restored. There were some that had fallen apart and it was really hard to decipher what they were. But that church was amazing just because it was so old. I bought a book that has a lot of pictures of it and descriptions of all of the icons. Most of the icons are in every church, so that book will be good to look at because it has a lot of good descriptions. Anyways, then after that church we went to the ancient site of "Lato." The gate was closed, but it said that it was supposed to be open, so Olin suggested we just hop the fence; he was the first one to jump across at 82 years old. haha. So the rest of us followed. The site looked very similar to all of the other ones that we have been to. But it's just so cool to see how advanced these people were 3,000 years ago and how much they had accomplished and how long it has lasted! Ingrid and I climbed around a
lot in the site and climbed up a little hill (the highest one there) so we could have a view of the ancient city. It was really cool. And it was really hot out, so we just kinda hung out there for a little while before we had to leave. Then we went to the little fishing village of Hagios Nikolaus (Saint Nicholas) and had lunch there. I had an amazing gyro... sliced pork, tomatoes, tsziki (a yogurt, cucumber sauce... the consistency of mayo), onions, and french fries, all wrapped up in a pita. yum! Then we went to the Crete aquarium. That was awesome. It wasn't that much different that aquariums in the US, but I love aquariums. They had a really cool tank with lots of jelly fish, that was probably my favorite one. Then, there was also a movie there just about ocean life in general, but it was an awesome one with a lot of cool footage. So yea, going to the aquarium was really cool and a lot of fun! And it was nice to see something modern after all of the ancient sites that we have been going to. Then yesterday, we went to
Kazanzakis' tomb, which is on top on a Venetian wall here in Heraklion. It was a really pretty site! And then Rachel gave her site report on Kazanzakis there, so that was really neat that we were able to talk about his life and everything that he did at the site of his tomb. Then, we went to a field and did an acting class with David. That was a lot of fun because we learned a little more about how we are supposed to act out our scenes and what to concentrate on. We also played a lot of fun theater games too there. Then, after the class, Ingrid, Kelly, and I stayed at the track/field and ran for a while. I couldn't do too much though because I think I bruised my foot somehow... I don't know how, and it's not that bad, but it hurts when I run. It's not too bad when I walk, just a little uncomfortable, but it doesn't really hurt. So hopefully it will get better soon! Then we went back up to Kazanzakis' tomb and did pilates around there because it is a really pretty location and it has really good grass
there, and it's a little out of the main part of the city, so there was no one there. That was really fun. It looked like one of the nature sites on the pilates videos. haha. So that was a lot of fun. Then last night we just hung out at the hotel. Then today we had a free day 😊 yay! Our first one yet! So Alicia, Nina, Brianna, Ingrid, and I went shopping this morning. And then we went to a nearby beach and stayed there for most of the afternoon. That was a lot of fun! It was like 75 or 80 and sunny, so it was gorgeous out! It was a little windy though, so that kinda sucked, but I'm not complaining 😊 And now we are just back at the hotel and I have to go eat dinner now, so I'll put up pics after dinner!
