We are in Crete!! Yay! And we have good internet for the first time in about a week. The last hotel we didn’t have it at all, and the one before that, we could barely pick up a signal from someplace else. But anyways, I’ll start with Wednesday… We went to Epidaurus in the morning and performed our pieces from “Agamemnon.” I think our (Ingrid, Rachel, and me) scene went really well. We didn’t forget any lines, so that was good 😊 It was so much fun performing this in the actual place that it probably was performed when it was written (I think the 5th century BC). The theater was in surprisingly good shape. So that was nice. After we did our scenes and walked around Epidaurus a little, we went to Mycenae. That site was ok. It was really cool, but it was just like a lot of other sites that we have seen; a bunch of ancient ruins and a museum full of pots. It is interesting how many of these sites there are though and how amazing it is that there were this many huge civilizations just here in Greece. And also how much archaeologists can tell

just from these pots and a few paintings and if they are lucky, writing. So that aspect of it is amazing, it’s just a lot to look at everyday. But anyways, the really cool thing about the Mycenaean is that they are from the 13th century BC, so one of the oldest. And, the only form of ruins they have found have been art, mainly pots. So everything that we know about the Mycenaeans is known from their art. So a lot is unknown about their civilization. Anyways, then we went into Napfio and ate lunch. A very late lunch, it was almost 4pm before we got there, so obviously we were all super hungry because breakfast was at like 8am. But yea, I had an amazing banana and nutella crepe. It was delicious! And so worth waiting that long for 😊 Then when we got back to the hotel, a few of us (Brock, Erik, Sara, Sam, and I) went swimming. It was super cold! But it was a lot of fun and the beach was awesome! It was right outside of our hotel and it was super sandy. Too bad it wasn’t warmer. I’m guessing the water was
about 45-50 degrees, because it was cold, but it wasn’t so cold that you felt like you had to get out immediately. So we stayed for a little while in there, until we pretty much went numb… It was only like 55 degrees outside and not sunny. So that made it colder, but it was still lots of fun!! Then we had dinner at the hotel, which was really good. It was a buffet which was really nice because we could control portions. And I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this, but the hotels give us so much food! I don’t know if it’s normal for them to serve that much, or if they just think we eat a lot because we are Americans. But yea, so that meal in Tolo was nice. Then the next day (I guess that was yesterday) we got up early, again, and went to Corinth. Again, another site of ancient ruins. But this one was especially cool just because of the Biblical connections. Not only did Paul write two letters to the Corinthians, but he actually was in Corinth, and they supposed know the exact location, and we went to that. So that was

pretty neat being in that exact spot. Then we keep driving to the port to get on the ferry. But along the way we stopped at the temple of Poseidon which was really cool. It was right along the coast. Again, it was another temple with a lot of pillars, but it was still pretty awesome, mainly because of the location. It was cool because, there, we met up with Olin Storvick, who was a professor at Concordia for 40 years, and he retired 13 years ago. So he’s 83 years old and still going strong. He was a Classical Studies professor and pretty much started the international educational program. He’s taken 35 groups abroad. So he knows what he’s doing and he knows this area very well, so it will be great to have him with us for the next few days. After we went to Poseidon’s temple, we got on the ferry at Pireus, Athens’ port. We had a picnic dinner on the deck which was awesome! The ferry was actually really nice. It was almost like a small cruise ship because there were a few restaurants and a couple shops. Also, we had cabins that we got
beds to sleep in which was really nice. Then this morning we got a wake up call at 5:30am saying that we had docked in Heraklion, so we got up and packed up our stuff and then got on a bus to bring us to our hotel. We had breakfast at the hotel, which was probably the best yet. Lots of bread and jam choices. Also, cheese crepes, fried eggs, and some little pastry things. Then, we went to Knossos, which is just right outside of the city. That was pretty cool, but again, a lot of ruins. These ones were pretty reconstructed though, so it was kinda nice to see what the things would have been like, but at the same time it also took a little away from the ancient site because a lot of it was built within the last couple hundred years by the archaeologists who discovered the site. So I kinda have some mixed feelings about that. But yea, then we explored the city a little bit. I like the city a lot. It’s not too big, we can walk from one end to the other in about half an hour or so. And our
hotel is right off of one of the main roads so that’s really nice and convenient. There are a lot of nice shops near our hotel. I only bought socks today though. Washing socks in the sink doesn’t work very well. Most of mine are in pretty tough shape already. The rest of my clothes are holding up ok with just the washing in the sink though. So that’s good because it’s really expensive to bring them to a laundromat. But yea, then we just ate dinner here at the hotel. It wasn’t that great, it was a buffet which was nice, but there weren’t many choices. There were the beans with the mystery sauce, fries and some sort of pork. So it wasn’t bad, but it just wasn’t incredibly good. And now I’m just up in my room uploading pictures since we haven’t had internet in a while.. And I want to get to bed early because we are going to the south side of the island tomorrow and we are leaving at 8, so it will be another early morning and another long day!
