The Big Rock!!! A mighty point of land that has been fought over for more than 13 centuries. Everyone wants to control the passage between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. That makes it truly multi-cultural--Moroccan, Spanish, English, French, Portugese and many more have influenced this small country. Once again, we did not book a tour from Princess and decided we could find our way around. We debarked the ship and started walking toward town when a young man, Michael, suggested that he be our tour guide for a price. He had a van that could hold all of us so we struck a deal and climbed in. It turned out to be a very good decision. His family has been in the tour business for many years and he knew just how to get us to ... read more

By 6am we were hurtling down the coast in a rented BMW at 160km per hour, hoping to make it to the edge of Europe in time to see the sunrise. We made it. I was impressed by the city, though we didn't have time to explore the rock itself. You have to cross the runway of the city's airport to get in. It felt very strange walking across such taboo pedestrian space, but all cars and people have to cross, stopping and going in time with landing planes. As you may know, Gibraltar is part of the UK, so I had to change currency back into pounds. The English breakfast is pretty foul wherever you are. Gibraltar is very English in appearance, with the same crosswalk buttons, phone booths, police uniforms, etc. It was strange ... read more

Gibraltar is a British Colony located at the base of Spain. For many years, it was the center of dispute and war between Spain and Great Britian. A few years ago there was a vote to join Spain. However, over 90% of the population voted to remain a British Colony. Because of that decision, red phone booths, Union Jack, and English speakers can be found everywhere. The most recognizable trait of Gibraltar is the Rock of Gibraltar. In Greek Mythology, Hercules put the rock there to mark the boundary of the end of the world. Throughout history, the rock was used as a fort to combat various invaders of the colony. It was also used to combat Nazi and Italian forces in Northern Africa during WWII. Soldiers during the time dug miles and miles of tunnels ... read more

So yeah, on Saturday Brad and I went to Gibraltar which was pretty cool. it´s like a 2.5 hour bus ride. the weather was like misting and rainy but it was still really cool. the rock is enormous, it looks so random since there is just flat plains all around and then the sea is flat and there´s this just massive hunk of stone purtruding up from the flattness. the customs there, since it technically is a seperate country were so informal. i literally did not stop walking as i flashed my passport to the customs agent for a split second. he just kind of waves everyone through. our tour guide was from gibraltar which means the weirdest mix of andalusian and british accent that i have ever heard. the St Michael´s caves were the first ... read more

February 23, 2008 When we woke up this morning it was cloudy and drizzling, but we were not about to let that ruin our exciting day ahead of us. We boarded the bus, and drove to Gibraltar. On the way there we watched The Shawshank Redemption, which I really liked. We finally made it to Gibraltar after 3 hours on the bus. Since we were about to step foot on British land, we needed our passports, but the guards really didn’t look at them, and sadly, they didn’t stamp them! We walked to another area to board smaller buses that would take us on our tour of Gibraltar. My bus driver was Dan, and ironically, his son lives in Indiana right on the boarder with Illinois. We started our tour with a drive through the town, ... read more

Hello! Happy Monday! I just got done with class and now I´m just hanging out until Beth gets done. I´m so sad I forgot my cord today for my camera, so I will have to add pictures tomorrow or the next day! Anyway, the weekend was a lot of fun! Friday night, Beth, Birdie, Lindsay, Leah and I went out to eat at a Mexican restaurant close to the water. It was delicious food... I got a chicken burrito with rice and beans and potato wedges. mmm. We all decided to get margaritas since we were going Mexican for the night... bad idea. They were pretty nasty, they were "strawberry" but they might has well have named them "cough syrup." Dinner was a lot of fun though with just the girls. We ended up just having ... read more
