Arrived in Berlin at 7.20 or so. We ditched our maps and plans because we had a museum on there first which only opened at 10 and cost 8 €! So we walked to the parliament house after brekkie and locking our bags in. We walked around the back of it where there were left-over pieces of Berlin wall. Sam took parts of it with him. We followed where the wall used to be to the Berlin Zoo park where there was a memorial dedicated to the victims of the Stasi. It was the last one left in Berlin. Next was the Brandenburger Gate. It was early and surprisingly there were almost no tourists - except us. Following the street we - unknowingly - discovered the Holocaust Memorial. Sam jumped on it - afterwards he felt bad for that (not really, but Claire will laugh). One of the highlights of today was the fagbox (not). It was a 'memorial' dedicated to the victims of discrimination of (male) homosexuals. It was really just a box with a hole in it and when you looked through there was a movie playing of two guys kissing. Along with all the embassy buildings there was
also a medicine research center with a ramdom flag with a dancing bear on it. At Potsdam Station, there were pieces of Berlin wall - full with Grafiti and chewing gum in the gun holes. We wanted to continue walking to checkpoint Charlie, which we did. There were quite a few tourists there. There was also the 'Czech Point' which was a Czech info service place which I thought was hilarious - the Czech Point at Check Point ... We then went back through the city center and saw the two twin buildings (and also some other ones) at Gendarmenmarkt - I guess one of the main places of Berlin. There were roadworks though and clearing up from some event last night so photos didn't turn out very nice. There was also this very random church - Saint Hedwig - which was not very fascinating except the roof from inside was a massive dome. We kept walking to another church which was red on the outside and boring inside. Then we sat down for a rest on a grass patch overlooking Berlin dome. Finally we proceeded to main street "Unter den Linden" with for example the state opera. There was
also a statue of Napoleon. We walked along that street with our goal the statue of victory. On our way was a russian memorial. And it started raining. Thank God we have our ponchos :P. We arrived at the statue of victory after a quite chronic walk. It is a big statue and very pretty. We also had lunch in the Zoo Park next to it. The Zoo Park is massive too. On our way back to the train station (because we were so tired already - last night was freezing on the CNL) we went to that little castle which was pretty but nothing too special. Finally, we wanted to find a supermarket so we went on a different street than main street. We did not find a supermarket - instead we almost got lost. So we just bought food for today and tomorrow and then got organised to go on the train we're on now: to Hamburg for the night in a hostel. Second day: very exhausting, very long but f**king fantastic 😊
