guten tag dearest family and other randoms,
it has been quite some time hasn't it? i just got back from a week in Berlin. we were there for a field trip in my Communications Studies. but of course all work and no play makes jack a dull boy so much fun was had as well. the first day we got there we got a brautwurst right away. delicious. i also tried a currywurst and i must say just the thought of sausage and curry powder makes me sick right now. not my favorite choice. then the group of about 15 of us, mostly from california except for 2 swedes and a german couple, got drinks at happy hour at a really decked out indian resturant. we then went back to our hostel which had an epic number of stairs that we complained about all week and played kings cup in the girls room which resulted in our german friend patrick having to drink the king of the cup in a locker covered in shampoo. aint college great?
the second day we took a 3 hour bus tour of Berlin where i caught up on my sleep but managed to glance
Mexikoplatz
cool guys.....i was along for the ride some things i would like to see later on foot instead of an a damn bus. we had bought a train pass that gave us unlimited rides on the metro and trains for a week so the boys and i decided to just go wherever our whims took us. we went and saw the destroyed church near Zoo. Garten where we were staying and the Posiden statue. we went to find an absinthe store but got nothing i swear 😊 and walked around the hip H market. then the boys saw that there was a train stop called Mexikoplatz and they found this somehow hilarious and we HAD to go even though it was about a 20 min ride. we got there and found ourselves in the german burbs where everything was closing down except for a 1 hour store where we got wine but no bottle opener. according to brennan by hitting a bottle on a tree the cork will come out...this did not work i can tell you. so we retreated home where i left again with yannika and tricia to go train hop some more. after messing up several times in finding a correct direction and getting
yelled at in german because we got on a closed train we made it to our random stop of choice. we found a gorgeous theater and snuck into the back actor's lot where we went in the actors lounge and bought bretzels and looked really out of place and i do believe many of them wondered how did these tourists get in here? we then went to my favorite place which is an old government building that squatters actually bought and turned into an art gallery. the place is covered in graffiti artwork which i found pretty cool inside and out and the outside has red lights everywhere and crazy items all about in the dirt. inside on the many levels there is artwork and jewelry and hippies and bohemians strewn about. on the top level there is a bar with dirty sweet couches everwhere and the wall is knocked out so you can see berlin. there are signs everywhere saying drugs are not allowed here don't sell or do them but i don't think that is always followed. it was an awesome place and apparently our professor knew it well. from his glory days perhaps? 😊
the third
day we went to a german news agency where we learned about how the publish their paper and it is amazing how little time they have to get things done. i don't know if i could manage those deadlines. this was the day of halloween so we went thrifting to find the perfect outfits. i found some phenomonal neon pink tights and some material of the same color and made myself a 80's esque superhero. we had a 60's girl, another superhero, a rockstar, a sugarplum fairy, and others amongst this. we all hung out at our hostel and then headed out into the night. now we knew that halloween was unpopular in europe. but wow we were the only ones dressed up. people had no idea why there was crazy people running around in the subways..not to mention with alcohol in their systems..we then went to a club where we danced and i most certainly utilized my cape in my movies. we had a circle of people around us. when we went to leave people asked us if we would stay because our style was so cool ha.
we went to the Topography of Terrors which is an
outdoor museum of information of the Nazi Terror and how it came to be and the well oiled machines behind it. it made me kinda sick just seeing how so many humans can be so evil and how so many can succumb to their lies and power. i didn't know about the book burnings and that the nazis used their power to imprision many political opponents and just how many people they imprisioned that were not jews. and they used so much public humiliation like shaving a womans head who had relations with a polish immigrant and making a school teacher who forbade her students to say Heil Hilter to wear a sign saying she was a traitor in a sqaure while people stared. and much more horrible stuff but it isn't the stuff i'd like to write too much about. we also went to the jewish museum which looks at the history of their religion and their culture up to present times. there was lots of modern art that depicted the suffering of the holocaust as well and a pomegranate tree which people put wishes on and another metal tree with wishes for equality and what it is. i
Superhero
note the blowdryer effect found it really interesting to read them.
the next day i went on a solo mission to Museumisle to see the Permagon which had a lot of ancient stautes and such. I really enjoyed going through the markets and listening to the street musicians. this one guy was playing glasses of water accompanied by an accordian player. my favorite was the food market at H market. i got some pomegranate and orange juice which made me really happy. then it began to rain so i ran for the train and went back to our hostel.
we also went to the Berlin Zoo. i love zoos they are so cool slash depressing. this one had no cages or fences??!! just trenches so the animals couldn't get out so weird. i loved this zoo because i saw animals i didn't even know existed, they scared me. it is quite odd to see a creature your brain has no information stored on. we saw the feeding of these hyena/wolf things and this man was throwing roosters to them right by my head. he didn't even tell me to move. i felt sick after that....
we also saw the remnants of
the berlin wall, checkpoint charlie, etc etc. i am rather tired seeing as i got back yesterday and right away went to an Arcade Fire concert so i can't get the strength to write about it all but i reccomend Berlin to all.
