Former communal washing area near the entrance to Grignan
A very hot day dawned. We took a drive this afternoon to the unexpectedly beautiful village of Grignan about ½ hour west of Nyons. There were lovely shady sycamore trees in the walk up to the town and amazing views of the area from outside the castle walls. On the way back we encountered a friendly game of boules in progress.

The Chateau de Grignan was originally built in the XI Century but has been destroyed and rebuilt a number of times, including after its destruction following the French Revolution. Restoration work is on-going but it is already a magnificent building in a spectacular position on a rocky plateau. It contained a collection of fine paintings, tapestries and antique furniture.
