Hi all,
Another belated blog! I thought it would be..nice to catch up on the outstanding entries I've been meaning to do. I'd planned on doing it the past few days, but instead decided to have a Lord of the Rings marathon with my family in London instead. Having a day of doing very little after my big portion of the trip felt luxurious to the extreme.
Nice was our next French destination after Toulouse. The drive into Nice on the bus was quite nice and the views along the busy highways were very pretty as we entered the outskirts of Nice. The ocean side towns were very pretty and akin to those in Amalfi and Positano. We arrived at the bus stop at Nice Airport. We were trying to find a way to get out of the airport with a level of difficulty. After a while we decided to go and get the tickets for the airport shuttle to the city. During the walk to the ticket booth we were stopped by a cordon and some armed soldiers. They said we couldn't enter the premises as there was a potential bomb threat. So we waited for it to
pass about half an hour later. We then got shuttle tickets and waited ages for the next airport shuttle to arrive. Our hostel was reasonable, although we were in a room where there were a lot of partying young'uns. We once again felt like the oldies of the hostel (a familiar story at most hostels). We went for a walk to the esplanade that evening which was nice. It seemed very Californian, because clearly I know what California is like as I've been there so many times haha. The beach was lovely, albeit it with yet more pebbles instead of sand (drat!). We cooked our own dinner that night as we are budget travellers after all! The next day I decided to go to the beach as I had some health issues going on during that week of my holiday. The loungers there were exorbitantly priced so I lay on the rocks like the locals. That afternoon we went out to Monaco/Monte Carlo. We took the train out there, there were some gorgeous coastal views. Sadly we had to view them over other people as we were on the wrong side of the train (of course). We went for a
wander towards the casino upon arrival. I was astonished by the scene of utter lavishness and excess. People were cruising up and parking their cars (or should I say getting their cars parked) outside the casino. There were Lamborghini's, Ferrari's, Porsche's, and every other flash car you can think of. These people's idea of pocket money is probably what we average folk make in a year I'd imagine. We also went for a walk up a hill to see the Prince's Palace of Monaco. The palace was white and was a blend of Renaissance and Medieval style by all appearances. There was a rather nice cathedral in the complex and a few tourist streets to walk down also. We made our way back to Nice a few hours later and had an evening esplanade walk and a quiet night in, rock in roll we are! The next day we went for a big walk up towards the higher parts of Nice. We saw a beautiful old monastery and some cultured gardens, from which a stunning view of Nice could be had. The green spaces in Nice were wonderful. This is a shorter blog than my former ones, this is purely
due to the fact that I didn't do as much as I would have liked due to my sickness at the time, however Nice was relaxing and somewhat chilled. It was a nice departure from being full on all the time though, rather nice actually. Pity about a lot of the French folk living up to their stereotype of not being particularly fond of tourists, alas we did encounter the odd nice French person or two. Over and out.
