Mon dieu - yes its us again - twice in one day!!
Monday morning, took tent down in double quick time and set off for Sabarros to our house sit in the Haute Pyrenees. As usual lovely countryside to admire - beats the boredom of motorways. Ian spotted the Pyrenees first, we were not sure if they were clouds to begin with but as they cleared there was no doubt. We stopped for a picnic lunch admired the view and were surrounded by lots of nightingales singing their heads off looking for a mate. Twas a special moment.
We finally arrived to meet Alex and her lovely dogs at about 6pm. She had prepared a scrumptious dinner of local chicken - have not tasted anything like that for ages. The house and its setting is peaceful and calming and we can see the Pyrenees from our bedroom window - how lucky are we? We were very tired and went to bed early and slept in a wonderfully comfortable bed.
Special note to Cathy, Gemma and Becky - it was like sleeping in the cots at Mrs Phelans!!
Alex had breakfast ready when we came down - felt
First sight of Pyrenees
Yes it really is them - a bit blurry due to cloud very spoilt, after we went on a whistle stop tour of the locality to get our bearings. First stop was the market in Trie de Base - markets are one of my favourite pastimes in France. Then to Galan the nearest village. Back for lunch on the patio and then off out again to Castlenau and back for another yummy meal cooked by our lovely host.
The following morning, we set off to the market in Lannemazan - it was brilliant and you will see from the pictures what fun it was to drool over the produce. We bought some fresh goods to make soup. In the covered area was the farmers market and there were local people selling their eggs, herbs, honey and even a lady with a box of goslings!
We met a guy that Ian had met the day before and had a coffee before returning home to wave Alex off to Spain. Stayed home with the dogs in the afternoon to keep them settled and just enjoyed chilling in the french farmhouse kitchen making soup.
As you will see our two little charges are absolutely delightful. Dolly (2) s the brown one, Gypsy
View from our bedroom
How lovely! and the air is so fresh and full of lovely smells (age unknown - like all of us increasing in age!) is the black one. They are extremely loving, well behaved and great fun. Dolly’s life mission is to catch the mice that run up and down the barn walls and the birds who come to the feeders - its our job to patrol and keep her away, Gypsy joins in when Dolly has done all the hard work. We have failed twice so far - one blue tit and one chaffinch have bitten the dust! Both dogs have fallen shamelessly in love with Ian and think his purpose on this earth is to take them for walks. You would not believe the dirty looks we got when going out after they returned from a 1.5 hour walk. Cheeky madams, but its all good fun and we are loving it. Only drawback is they are very early risers, there is no chance of sneaking off for a pee and jumping back in bed because the minute the floorboards squeak they are barking and howling and insisting you come down and stick with their routine. The enthusiastic greeting you get when you come down makes it all worthwhile.
They love running
Walking the dogs
Yep this is the view through the fields of long grass and come back with their coats soaked with the morning dew and lie in the sun to dry off - when they do they feel like silk. On the first morning we gave them their usual treat when we were going out and Gypsy came out and sat between us and the door and would not go in - it was hilarious Ian had to pick her up and plonk her back in her bed.
Tomorrow I will tell you about our trip up the Pyrenees.
à bientôt
