Near the Arc
Look it's so pretty xD I'm writing this on Thursday (yes I'm a terrible person, sue me) so it might be slightly inaccurate as my memory has never been my greatest asset. So there may or may not have been a whale on a 6-wheeled skateboard and the Pope may or may not have tried to sell us roofies. I apologise.
We started the day by visiting the Opera House. This is a superb structure which is absolutely coated in marble. It's like the architect went to a marble factory (or wherever the hell you buy marble from and said "I would take all of it, but it's not enough. Get more." It's like a marble cake with marble on top. I cannot accurately stress how much marble there is in this place. The stage is magnificent, huge, and really pretty. It makes the shoebox that is the De La Salle hall look like a matchbox with a mould infestation. But they had millions of francs (at the time) and we didn't.
Next up - the Madeline. Another cathedral, just as beautiful as the other two. I know you're all tired of hearing me rant about Gothic churches, but they truly are magnificent. (I
We're ON A BRIDGE!
Yes Charlie, we are. am running out of big words, have you noticed?) So long story short, pretty church.
We went up the Arc de Triomphe after, which is a glorious monument on the outside even though it looks a bit like the Floriana subway from the inside. Yet more steps. By this point my legs are beyond death threats. The Arc is in the middle of this sort of massive roundabout (an etoile apparently - that's start for people who are even worse at French than I am) so you can see all the roads zooming out of it, it's pretty cool. xD
We climbed down the thing at breakneck speed (insert epic music here), sat down a bit because we made ourselves dizzy, and then walked down the Champs-Elysees. There were some really cool car showrooms (notably Pegeout and Mercedes) with some beautiful machines on display, and then there was the Virgin Megastore where we naturally got held up. I am very happy to say that I resisted the urge to buy everything and instead bought nothing at all. It was a first and will probably be a last. At least I gave it a shot. CDs are just as
Family on the Tower
Inside because they were all freezing. expensive as Malta anyway. (As a side note, Paris is the most expensive place I have ever been to, if you ever plan on visiting on a tight budget you are going to starve.) Mother finally bought some decent headphones and we also got our tickets to Disneyland. Go us.
That evening we decided to climb the Eiffel Tower. Sadly the stairs were closed (it was after 6) so we had to do it the sissy way. Excellent fun anyway and the view from the top was magnificent. We went up a bit before sunset so the timing was (almost) perfect. We got most of the sunset on the second floor and dusk and night from the top. On our way down we had a look at the menu for the Jules Verne - that's the restaurant on the first floor of the tower - and discovered that a set menu with wine would only set you back around 300e. 200 without the wine. Your call. Wannabe romantic men in the audience, save up. If the lucky lady doesn't finish her food you are allowed to throw her off the thing. We had a hysterical lift attendant who kept
Me and Pete on the Tower
Outside because we're badass. sighing "Mon Dieu" to herself when a guy tried to get into the wrong lift on the way down which was quite amusing.
We ate pasta with butter at home because there's only so much decadence you can force your stomach through every day and we were pooped. Also we needed the rest, becaese Wednesday was Disney-Day. Fun fun fun fun fun. And Tiggers. More in the next post. Au revoir.
