The museum is located in an old bunker and you are able to walk around the grounds where the Germans had built an installation to protect the submarine base in Brest.

Still Baffled

Historians are still baffled about the reason the megaliths were put up and the pattern that was used – this is one located near Camaret, but there are numerous others located throughout this area of Brittany.

This is the Monument to the Bretons of Free France, known as the Cross of Pen-Hir and inaugurated by General Charles de Gaulle in 1960

The French poet, Saint-Pol-Roux lived in this home in Camaret until the germans killed him and his daughter in 1940. The house was bombed out by the Allies in 1944 – it must have been magnificent as you can see in the photos.

The Inner Harbor

There is an inner and outer harbor in Camaret. We are in the outer harbor as it is much deeper and safer to enter. The inner harbor is used mainly for local residences, but a few visiting yachts do visit as well.

An interesting juxtaposition of the peaceful beach and the bunker left over from the war.

You can see that some of the coastline is quite stark and barren as noticed behind this traditional sailboat coming into Camaret.

No matter how grey the rocks are you can always find some color with the various flowers growing here.

These were a few of the “rocks” that we could not see when we arrived due to the fog – we were happy to have a chartplotter that kept us away from these!

Notice the difference in this beach – in the top left the beach is gone completely, then a small beach, a larger one and then the bottom right shows how large a beach you get with a 18-20 foot tide.

A different view of the graveyard for fishing boats – note how far out of the water they are here, but at times they are partially in the water when it is high tide.

A few scenes we saw while on our bike today – beautiful views of the bay, hay bales in the fields, & “some guy” riding in front of me!

There have been some beautiful sandy beaches, this one was a rocky one, but still enjoyable to explore.

This harbor was well protected by various forts as you can see the remains of them on the hills here.
