“It is always sad to leave a place to which one knows one will never return. Such are the melancolies du voyage; perhaps they are one of the most rewarding things about travelling.” - Gustavo Flaubert Greetings from Split - we can’t believe that tonight is our last night in Croatia! We are back in Hotel Slavija in Split, where we booked an additional night, in a very lovely room with a little stone balcony. We just shared a beer on our balcony 😀. We also found out that breakfast is included tomorrow morning - bonus! We had a really enjoyable day today travelling from Šibenik to Trogir, then on to Split. We had a leisurely morning, and hauled our suitcases to the bus depot (it was a lot easier going down the stairs and down ... read more

We had a really wonderful day today, on our boat trip to the Kornati Islands, and most of the day was lovely and sunny. Despite the crappy weather forecast! We were so afraid that it would rain and the trip would be cancelled, but we were lucky with the weather, right until the end of the day. So, we started the day with breakfast in our apartment (yogurt, leftover bread from last night’s dinner with hummus, dried figs, banana). We had it on our balcony while admiring the view of St Michael’s Fortress in the sun. We met the others down the hill at the civilized hour of 9:30. I managed to publish the blog this morning before we left, after having lots of problems last night. The SIM card we’ve been using for our phones, ... read more

We had a wonderful day today exploring Krka National Park. It was a day of waterfalls, a beautiful monastery, and lots of steps (over 26,000 according to my fitbit). We started the day with a coffee and yogurt in the room, then walked to the coffee shop/bakery by the bus station to pick up a coffee and sandwiches for lunch later. Our mini van picked us up shortly after 8 and we were on the road for Krka National Park. The park is enormous, extending from the Adriatic near Šibenik to the mountains of the interior. We drove for about 20 minutes from Šibenik, and then walked for about two hours, walking on boardwalks past the Krka River and passing waterfall after waterfall, and climbing lots of steps. When we got to the park about 8:30 ... read more

The pleasure we derive from journeys is perhaps dependent more on the mindset with which we travel than on the destination we travel to.”– Alain de Botton After a good sleep in our apartment in Sibenik last night, we had a breakfast of coffee and leftovers (cheese, bread, hummus, dried figs, apple). We bought a small container of milk last night and after we used it for coffee this morning, we noticed later it was missing from the fridge. Someone stole our milk – how rude! It was too chilly and rainy to eat on our balcony, but we enjoyed our picnic breakfast all the same. Yes, the weather has indeed changed and the rain has arrived. We walked through the wind and the rain to meet Tamara and the others at the bus station at ... read more

Greetings from Sibenik! (It is pronounced “Shi-ben-ick”). We had a nice breakfast in the Hotel Slavija restaurant this morning, before our journey from Split to Sibenik. By the way, Hotel Slavija is the oldest hotel in Split, opening in 1900. The building dates back to the 17thC and was built above Diocletian’s private baths. We had breakfast in the basement of the hotel, where the Roman baths were located. We had a bit of time before we had to leave so I took a quick walk around Diocletian’s Palace. It wasn’t too busy at that time of the morning, and it was really nice just taking a bit of time to admire the fascinating buildings, and I wanted to find a chocolate shop that Zigi recommended, so I knew where it was when we come back ... read more

Greetings from Split! I only have a mere 18,026 steps today, so I am behind yesterday, but today did involve yet more steps. We were up quite early this morning, to ensure we were out ready to meet the group by 7:30, with time to get a pastry and coffee first. We hauled our suitcases back down the many steps (it was a lot easier going down than it was going up!) and popped into a bakery for a breakfast pastry to take with us and the coffee shop for a nice cappuccino. We met met the group, then we walked to the dock to catch our 7:45 ferry to Split. These ferries are very efficient, and always have lots of room to store luggage. The one hour trip was smooth sailing, and after we disembarked ... read more

“But the beauty is in the walking - we are betrayed by destinations.” - Gwyn Thomas And walk we did! Along quiet roads, paths, goat trails, trails full of rocks, twisty trails, up hills and down hills. I’ve got over 27,000 steps so far and it’s only 5 pm! (Now it’s close to 9 pm and I’ve got well over 29,000). But, let’s start at the beginning. We lazed around our apartment this morning, and just had our 3 in 1 coffee packets and some leftovers for breakfast (cheese and rice cakes, grapes, and the last of our cakes from the bakery in Korcula). We met the group around the corner by the bus station at 8:50 am, then I popped into a nearby coffee place to get Susan and I double cappuccinos (they were very ... read more

Greetings from Hvar! We had an extremely early start to the day, getting up not long after 4:30 am, to shower and get our things together ready to leave at 5:30. I went out on our terrace to see what the weather was like, and the sliver moon and the stars were bright and beautiful. We hauled our bags down the very steep and narrow flights of stairs, and met the group around the corner at 5:45, at the foot of yet more stairs. I wandered around a bit in the faint hope that a cafe might be open to get us a coffee, but as expected nothing was open that early. Our ferry from Korcula to Hvar left promptly, and we settled in the the 1 1/2 hour journey. Thankfully the coffee kiosk was open, ... read more

“A dominant impulse on encountering beauty is to wish to hold on to it, to possess it and give it weight in one’s life. There is an urge to say, ’I was here, I saw this and it mattered to me.’” - Alain de Botton We had a lovely day today at the beautiful Mljet National Park, on Mljet Island. We started the day by enjoying breakfast on the sunny terrace of our apartment, admiring the lovely view. We had some fruit, and some of the delicious cakes we bought yesterday from Cukarin Bakery, along with packets of coffee we got at Konzum grocery shop. It was a nice relaxing start to the day. We met the group on the steps to the old gate to the town (just around the corner), and we walked a ... read more

Greetings from Korcula! (The island, and town, is pronounced “Kor-chu-la”). After a leisurely breakfast at Hotel Plecka this morning, we left Dubrovnik at 9:30 for our journey to Korcula, located off the northern end of the Peljesac Peninsula. It was a warmer morning than yesterday, and another bright and sunny day. We drove north from Dubrovnik along the spectacular coastline, winding and twisting along the coast with views of the Elaphiti Islands. These island are protected so are mainly undeveloped. The steep hillsides were covered with lots of olive trees, various fruit trees, and pine trees. We crossed to the Peljesac Peninsula, which is known for its wineries, and we passed lots of vineyards. The grapes grow very low to the ground in this area, and often in terraced areas because of the steep hills. After ... read more
