On leaving Chesky Krumlov to catch an early local bus to the railway station we were given a packed breakfast to eat on the way. We eventually got to Vienna and booked into the Mozart Hotel adjacent to the main railway station about mid-day, where a number of us made our way to a local street café to enjoy an Austrian strudel.
After lunch Alan and I took the metro into the city centre where we made our way to St Stephen’s Cathedral and their Grand Opera House. The Opera was fully booked and not wanting to wait for returns Alan and I bought tickets for a musical evening which featured a forty piece orchestra and five opera stars. This proved to be a good choice and was very much enjoyed.
The following morning Alan and I were joined by Pam and Ruth from Australia to visit the Spanish Riding School where we enjoyed a practise session held by the famous Lipizzaner and their uniformed horseman.
Later that morning Alan and I went to visit Vienna’s oldest fairground big wheel and then onto the royal families summer house where we saw the Klimt exhibition featuring The

Hofburg Palace Kiss. I then slipped off on my own to join a back stage theatre visit of Vienna’s National Theatre which was unfortunately in German. But on my return passing the Opera House at 5pm I saw a number of people queuing for standing room day tickets for that evenings performance of Barber of Seville. After a two hour wait I secured front row tickets and had an enjoyable evening at the princely price of just 7 euros.
Although the city centre was much like any other, the depth and breath of it’s art and music ensured a memorable visit.
