With a few hours left in Vienna, we spent the morning touring some sites. The Ring was busy with locals and tourists who had come to shop or eat. We were told that the Viennese stop for a cafe and dessert any time of the day. Now this Khyati could get used to. So, of course, we stopped at a cafe before more sightseeing. The cakes were delicious as was the Viennese iced coffee. They sure know how to do dessert in Europe! We continued on to the Opera house to get a peak at the inside. Unfortunately, the tour and performances were later that day and we would've have already left. So, we snuck into it after attempts to convince several Opera House staff failed. The most we ultimately saw was the lobby of the Opera House which was magnificent but it was as far as we could go. Then we went to the large open market and grabbed lunch to go. It was already time to retrieve our bags from the hotel and head to the train station to catch our train to Salzburg, birth place of Mozart.
We reached Salzburg at 17:00 and followed walking directiosn to
our hotel but not before booking our next day tickets to Hallstat. It was a pleasant but long walk and we arrived to the bed and breakfast which was in a residential area. The owner had left a note for us saying they had to leave for a theatre performance and we should let ourselves in. Looking at the yard and decor, we could tell we were in for a ride. The large property was filled with decorations and chachkees and odds and ends of all kinds, shapes, colors etc. There were status of chickens, ducks, roosters, and rabbits on the lawn and a number of other outdoor decor we can't even remember. The inside was similarly chaotic and each room was decorated in different yet schizophrenic ways. Not that we claim to be experts in interior design but it was type of place that made you question the sanity of the owner. Nonetheless, we unpacked and planned our time in Salzburg, which is also the location of the Sound of Music. We walked a long distance to the old part of Salzburg where the sites and restaurants were located. It was an old city that was situated on either
sides of a river. As it was dinner time, we menu shopped and saw an Indian restaurant. By this time, we were both craving Indian but thought we should be eating typical Austrian food. After more menu shopping, we realized Austrian cuisine was meat heavy and options were limited for us. Then we stumbled upon an Austria-Italian-Indian restaurant. Perfect. The Austria garlic soup was delicious but the Indian food left much to be desired. Oh well! We walked around the rest of the night, passing by the home of Mozart. By now the streets had filled up with revelers. Surprisingly, there was a young population in Salzburg that came out to the historic part of the city to pub hop. We took the long walk home and returned to our interesting lodging.
