Magnificent, lush, green, wet, alive, elegant, relaxing, serene, and vivid are all words that could be used to describe our trip to Asa Wright Nature Reserve in Trinidad. The nest of the crested oropendola are quite complex and are large enough to see from quite a distance. They had some hanging so you could see them up close.

The guide showed us one of the well-known tropical flowers that grow here. It is locally called the “sexy pink”.

This shows the size of one of the monkey ladder vines found in the rainforest.

The small yellow items on the ground are really leaves being carried by the leaf cutters on a well defined trail.

We took a hike which treated us to this great view of a waterfall.

The harmony spider is similar to a daddy long legs that we know from home.

This hydro-electric generator had been used to pump water up the main house but hasn’t been in use for a number of years.

The local name of hot lips was easy to remember for this flower.

Everything grows big in the rainforest as seen by these leaves.

The roots of this palm tree become bright red when there is water. When it is dry they become brown. It is quite a sight to see.

Many of the plants look familiar from plant gardens, but they are “super-sized” here.

This gives you an idea of the size of the vines that are found in the rainforest. We broke down and wore long pants to protect us from the insects (as much as possible)

Luckily they had some shelters located throughout the rainforest so you could stay dry while waiting for the rain to stop (or at least slow down).

The buttress roots help to stabilize the trees as the roots are very shallow and the trees are very tall in order to reach the sunshine.

The crested oropendola are about the size of a large crow, but the yellow tail and beak is quite beautiful when they are in flight.

The flower of the wild ginger is quite spectacular. The roots spell like ginger, but they are not edible.
