Touring Puerto Rico
Ricky Martin’s Home.
Our ship, the Explorer of the Seas pulled into San Juan Puerto Rico in the early afternoon and we were able to disembark around 2PM. So once again I had myself a lazy start of a morning with two sleepyheads as cabin mates. Mind you, I too was being lazy and was so lazy I only contemplated taking a trip outside of our cabin to check out the deck…I have the rest of the week to do that!
Instead I did a bit more crafting, some reading and surfing of the net. I am a self admitted addict to the computer game Spider…just one more game…
After a filling lunch up at the Windjammer we readied ourselves for an afternoon in San Juan. Pass the sunblock please! We booked ourselves on a short tour of Old San Juan and then a tour of the Bacardi Rum Factory. I wasn’t the most keen on going to the Bacardi Rum Factory but both Laura and Alice were keen on going and being able to purchase a bottle of rum that is only on sale at the factory. So off we went.
At Fort San Cristobal
That's some pretty fancy graffiti! Our first stop was to see some of the massive ancient fortresses and stone walls of San Juan. The stone walls have protected the Capital of Puerto Rico since the conquistadors built them in the 16th Century. We stopped off at the San Cristobal Fortress and we were given some time to explore the Fortress on our own. There were some amazing views up there and some interesting underground tunnels as well. After our visit to the San Cristobal Fortress we drove through Old San Juan and even passed by where Ricky Martin lives. Apparently he bought two penthouses and made them into one.
Our second major stop was at the World famous Bacardi Rum Distillery where we learned a bit about the history of San Juan and its sugar cane past. We also learned the complete history of the Bacardi family and the process of making rum in the Bacardi museum. Part of the museum allows you to smell the different kinds of Bacardi rums and we were given two tickets to sample some Bacardi as well. I only used one of my tickets to try a mojito. Not bad but that could be because it wasn’t
that strong. That being said, it didn’t stop me from going all red after drinking a small glass (well plastic cup) of mojito. Lol
From the Bacardi tour we were given two options. 1) go back directly to the ship or 2) get dropped off in the town square and do a little bit of shopping before walking back to the ship. Alice opted to go back to the ship directly while Laura and I took a little walk around San Juan before re-boarding. Nothing too exciting to report in regards to shopping. It was pretty much what you’d expect to see in any touristy spot. There were lots of jewelers, booze, souvenirs and stuff. They did have a small market area set up close to the cruise ship terminals that were neat to browse. We didn’t spend too much money but it was nice to go for a little walk and look around.
Laura and I made it back onto the ship around 7PM and were feeling absolutely famished so we walked past the Promanade café on the fifth floor on the way back to our cabin and picked up some pizza, sandwiches and desserts for us
and Alice to nosh on. Now that hit the spot! Mind you I don’t think it was quite enough for Laura so she made a little trip to the Concierge Club up on the ninth floor to see what they had on offer. Mmm, strawberries dipped in chocolate, chicken curry skewers, beef skewers, samosa triangles and egg rolls. Mmm, not this really hit the spot! Lol
Christie usually has to work until about 8:30 every night so we waited for her before having our dinner. Mind you, tonight we had tons of snacks at 7PM I really wasn’t all that hungry. Not saying that I didn’t join everyone up at the Windjammer come dinner time. Lol Tonight was sort of an Italian theme. I swear, you take just a little bit of this and a little bit of that and your plate is full! I always start off my plate with a big pile of lettuce and other salad fixings topped off with a bit of honey mustard dressing before digging into the day’s offerings. Guess taking some salad always makes me feel better about the gorging. Lol Plus it is always tough to get your veggies into your
