San Cristobal had a number of wells. The Spaniards did not allow animals in the forts for fear of contaminating their water supply. The Dutch did once capture San Cristobal but they were undone by disease passed onto the water supply by animals they kept in the fort.

The US had to, of course, sully a 400 year old structure by building an observation post. This was built to look out for German submarines during World War II.
