Well we started out adventure through Central America. Panama City is our first stop and this is our first day, we are off to get into trouble and will report back soon!
Alrighty folks, First day down, here are the details (this will not be daily event for the sake of both you and us) but we have the time and free internet so I'm going to town on this one!
We flew in late last night so thought it best to reserve a hotel room in advance and stayed there last night. This morning we got up, had breakfast and put on the pack backs and hit the streets! The heat was insane, the back packs heavy and the roads are un-named so we wandered... Checked out the city and then took a cab to Mamellena BackPackers Hostel and got set up for tonight, then went back out for a stroll of the shops but today is a national holiday and most places are closed. We went to the grocery store and bought some different .54 cents Panamanian beers and are taking it easy. Tomorrow we stay at a different hostel and are heading to the causeway (long
peir/penninsula) that was recommended to us by the guy at the hostel. And the next day hopefully to the Panama Canal and Zoo & Garden there. Will write when we can!
Today we went to the causeway which is a huge 2 km stick of land that juts out into the ocean made out of train load after train load of dirt and rocks that were dug out of the Pnama Canal when it was made. We rented bicycles and rode the strip and went to the Smithsonian Aquarium/Day park and saw some cool animals and forest. Then we went to the Miraflores Locks the first lock of the actual Panama Canal and watched a huge ship exit the final step and then continued on to the Summit Zoo and Botanical Gardens were we saw CRAZY animals! I fed a sloth, got peed on by a monkey, saw a rodent the size of a hippo and then we took a crazy crowded bus back to some crazy place in the city and tried to get a cab back to where we were staying and asked 3 taxi´s who refused and finally the fourth taxi found an english speaking friend
and a telephone and got us home! Tonight we are in a new hostel (half a block away from the one last night) not because we didn´t like it but just to try out different things. Tomorrow we are heading north the San Carlos and winging it.
