Angel in a boat
Bocas del Toro, Panama Back in Naranjo after a fantastic trip. We had originally planned to head to the city of David in Panama and buy ourselves a run about. Unfortunately, David offers little, and this time around it was definitely not offering us a car. Such circumstances put us on the next minibus over the hill and straight to Bocas del Toro, the Caribbean. The trip itself is quite beautiful, and it’s worth staying awake if you want to take in the beautiful scenery - this information is second hand, as I was the idiot that slept 3 hours and 45 minutes of the 4 hour ride.
To get anywhere in Bocos Del Toro, one must take a Water Taxi. Àngel was enjoying himself haggling the prices down again. We opted for a whole days snorkeling tour around the islands, and reefs. The highlight was a fantastic little island straight out of Pirate of the Caribbean. Coconut trees, white sand and completely solitary. Àngel and I were enjoying a bit of skinny dipping… Poor Brett. Unfortunately there was more of the tour to see and unwisely we left the island behind for lesser spectacular views. I could have stayed a week on that island!

Bocas del Toro, Panama Bocas town itself is quite enchanting, and the coast is lined with weatherboard houses on stilts, a number of which reminded me of a typical Kiwi Bach. Most have decks jutting out over the water, our usual place for eating lunch.
Jungle boat rides are grand, especially when there are in your direct route north. Loney Planet nominates it ‘best journey’ in Panamá, and quite rightly. Not a half bad way to get back up to Costa Rica.
The vibe in Puerto Viejo is just about as Tranquillo as it gets. It also offers a superb breakfast menu at a nifty place called ‘Café Rico.’
Àngel had his first go surfing, even though the surf wasn’t exactly ideal. I believed he is not deterred despite the number of nose dives and decent thrashing he received. He was also intrigued by the experience of board wax knotting his chest hairs.
I can’t decide if Cahuita (just north of Puerto Viejo) is just more tranquil than P.Viejo, or if it’s just that it’s completely empty. Not even an ATM to mention. We managed to keep busy doing silly things like an 18km bike rides through the National Park, playing cards, basking in
the sun, cooking and reading. Àngel was rotten on the last day ‘cause we had books and he did not. It appears Costa Ricans don’t read much, and consequently bookstores are not frequent. The Spanish mustn’t travel much either, otherwise a book in Castellano might be found in one of the ‘book exchanges’ set up in just about every café.
We’re back in Naranjo again, and off on Sunday. As keen as we are to continue on, it will be a sad occasion saying goodbye to my host family here. Thank you Melina, Rolando, Isa and Mami for putting up with us so long. We’ll miss you greatly, but look forward to seeing you in NZ.

Gracias Melina, Rolando, Isa, Mami, Camila y Chuchu. Les esperamos en Nueva Zelanda.
