HJT stealing a kiss from the local mascot
Nicaragua was another Central American country which I didn't pay due respects to given my scarcity of time. I missed out on the natural attractions, such as the Corn Islands off the Carribbean Coast and Ometepe Island on Lake Nicaragua, deciding instead to stick to the colonial cities of Granada and Leon. It's said that the former was a conservative stronghold during the Contra War, while the latter was a staging post for the revolutionaries and remains a hotbed of radicalism. I think a couple of days in each was just a little too brief to really sniff out the political winds.
