Too sexy
We did not know you could sweat this much. Day 2 - Chester and Kirsten nil; Volcano one (3 Aug 2010)
We woke up at 6 am and prepared for our big hike. We ordered sandwiches and 3 liters each of bottled water the night before so we had something for the trek. We were suppose to get our own guide, but ended up sharing a guide with a kid who just graduated from high school in South Africa. We took probably a 10 mile drive to the base of the volcano, which took the driver 30 minutes to navigate the roads, free-range animals and children walking to school. At the base we started the hike that was just over 1,000 meters of elevation to a beautiful lake at the top of the volcano. It really seemed like our guide and Ricky, the high school graduate who looked like a young, 25ish Grizzly Adams, were in a race against each other. Kirsten and Chester couldn’t get over the fact that we were sweating buckets, worse than a whore in church on Sunday. While on the trek we saw a ton of birds and a bunch of monkeys. The monkeys were very loud, especially when the chain saw was on.
Are we there yet?
No, how much farther? They either did not like that chain saw or the fact that the Nicaraguans were cutting down their rain forest.
Needless to say, it was clear early on, that Kirsten and Chester might not make it all the way to their desired destination. The terrain was muddy, slippery, precarious, but mostly slippery. Kirsten managed to slip and slide her way up and down the volcano. We hit a little over the half way point at 600 meters. Here the terrain starts to go straight up and is even more rocky and difficult and covered in moss. It was here that Kirsten and Chester had to make a decision. Sadly, they knew they weren’t going to make it to the top, so do they prolong the carnage and the sweating and go as far as they can, or do they cut their losses and turn around. . . they cut their losses and turned around. There was a group of fraternity guys from Holland behind them, so Ricky was able to proceed with them, while our guide made a b-line down the volcano. “Hey, wait for us.” There was a little shame in the fact that Hector was right, we
What is taking you so long Chester
Kirsten after she got her second wind but before chester did. couldn’t make it, but there was one of the Dutch guys, who barely made it a quarter of the way up so at least we did better than that guy!
So after we swallowed our pride and took the drive of shame back to the hotel where we enjoyed our ham and cheese sandwiches on the beach. We were saddened by the fact that we were not eating our lunch at the top of the volcano, and then even more scared when a giant blue jay- like bird attacked us for our sandwiches. Kirsten appeased the bird with a slice of bread, but we really felt like we were in that phone booth when the “Birds” attacked. After lunch we waded into the lake that was a warm 80 degrees and then fell fast asleep in the world’s most uncomfortable beach chairs. We followed up beach time with a few beers , fruit salad and French fries to tide us over. With the muscles aches starting to set in and the complete lack of night life on the island it will likely be another early evening ahead of us. Maybe we will get lucky and have a “Law and
Order” marathon on TV tonight. We do have another early morning tomorrow with a trip to the waterfall, which we think includes a hike. (holy crap). Then we are off to San Juan Del Sur to settle into our house for the rest of the trip and wait for the Dirty Thirty Girls to arrive from Omaha, that’s when the partying will begin.
