This is a poster in Esteli honoring some of those that died in the revolution and contra war.
I have begun to learn some of the eccentricities (sp¿) of Nica spanish. Chele and Chela is the same as Gringo and Gringa. Instead of saying De Nada for your welcome, people say A La Orden or Suya. Also, these crazy Nica´s drop s´s. I am understanding more and more even if my ability to speak still sucks. ANYWAY

Just got back from Esteli. We were in Ocotal and Condega yesterday, which was pretty amazing. We talked to a TON of people about various issues: the revolution, the contra war, the upcoming election, the sandanistas in general, womens rights and issues like domestic violence, access to healthcare and education, etc. Condega was the best though. We went to the little local archaeology and culture museum. The little room was full of pottery, lithics, bone, etc from local excavations. The next room talked about old families in Condega, music, dance, local legends, etc. The lady at hte museum was adorably sweet. We also went up a little hill and saw a Somoza-era plane that had been shot down there in Condega. We made a trip to the nearby potting community of Ducale Grande. This was a very rural area...the entire village

was working to build a bridge and there was a cart full of rocks being pulled by oxen up a hill. The pottery cooperative we visited was run entirely by women and the stuff was beautiful. I bought a couple of pieces. I had the doña explain the process that they go through to make the pots... she showed us the tornos (wheels) and the hornos (ovens) and talked about how long they fire it and how they decorate it. We also met with an organization called Red de Mujeres. This organization is run entirely by volunteers and fights domestic violence - sexual, physical, psychological, etc. It was very inspiring to talk to all these grass-roots organizations.

I am hot and sweaty and will end with more pictures. much love.
