So Rachael and I are at a cyber on our way home from work, which by the way I start on weds! AHHHH Wish me luck please. And pray for me. Lots. haha. So Saturday we sat around all day and then we went to this neat youth service at a big church and we sang and danced a little (dancing in church isnt so accepted here) and then hung out. When we got back I was exhausted so I just went right to bed. Sunday I got up and went to church. Their sunday morning church is neat because after Pablo gives his sermon the floor is open for the people to respond. It was neat because this one man went on a huge rant about how when women arent allowed to preach or be ... read more

Hola!

Wow. So after I updated the other day I already have SO MUCH to tell. I have a feeling once I settle in my updates wont be so crazy but everything here is just fascinating to me and I feel the need to tell it. You all know I like talking anyway haha. First off..The animals here. Dogs and cats roam free and are very skinny. Also, any horses Ive seen look realllyyyy starved which kills me but people need to feed themselves so yeah. In my room so far I have seen a lizard on the wall, a mouse roaming around, a very large spider and there is an ant trail on my wall. They wander up and down all day long and its actually very fascinating. I think the lizard was my favorite though. ... read more

Hello everyone. Hopefully there are actually people that are going to read this! I am here at my new house in Nicaragua! I am living with a family of four. Dad (Pablo), Mom (not sure of her name. whoops.) Isaac my "brother" and my "sister" Jessica. Isaac is seventeen and Im not sure how old Jessica is. Oh and Im sorry for not having apostrophes but they dont work on the keyboard haha. Anyway, my plane landed a little late last night but not by much. Omar (Project Chacocentes translator and a good friend of mine) and Gabriel (Charitos right hand man) were there waiting for me. I really didnt et excited until then because saying goodbye to everyone was so hard but as soon as I saw them and then walked out and smelled Nica ... read more

So, after trying to call several different numbers on several different days and getting ahold of no one who knew anything about tours, and after nearly giving up and saying forget it, I decided to try my luck and head to the factory without having talked to anyone who had any clue what was going on. Good thing I did. I bused back from Las Peñitas to Leon and from Leon I bused to Chichigalpa, home of the Flor De Caña Ron factory. I walked, pack and all, to the factory and told the guard I wanted a tour. After telephoning someone he told me to come back at 2. Alright, it´s going to happen after all and this trip was not in vain!! I had a few hours to kill but was absolutly going ... read more

This morning, Summer and I left Esteli and headed back to Managua, to spend our last weekend in Nicaragua. It´s still incredible that these weeks have been so full of travel, people, emotions, and activities--but yet, time still flew by so fast, i have a bit of mental whiplash. Today I had to make sure it was really Friday by asking Summah, and even she hesitated for a second. So, to back up and share things from the last few days: Summer, Josh, and I stayed in Esteli the past few days. Josh joined us last minute, and took classes at the same Spanish school as me. Summer took off and spent the night at Miraflor on Tues-Weds, and then came back to Esteli on Weds. On Weds, my spanish class took a field trip to ... read more

Today was our last day here in Nicaragua :( For our last day we did work, and I thought it was good that we ended with a work day. The whole time I was thinking that I wish we still had a couple more days and I was definitely not ready to end this experience. In the morning I asked Dr. Stecksholtie if I could shadow him at the clinic, so I was pretty much just a fly on the wall as he examined patients. Jessica was in the room too, helping him translate. I am so glad I had the chance to do this because out of all the things we did down in Nicaragua, what was most impressive to me was the interaction with the people. It was interesting to see what types of ... read more

So we forced ourselves to leave San Juan Del Sur. It wasn’t a bad idea since we are running out of time, but we do wish we could have spent more time here. After we left we headed off to Ometepe, the island formed by two volcanoes in the middle of Lake Nicaragua. One is called Maderas and the other, the larger of the two, is Concepcion. The boat ride over was interesting. Lucas forced Lindsay onto the most rickety rocky boat either of us has ever seen. She thought she was going to get sea sick, but luckily she didn’t feel sick at all. We spent the first night in a town called Moyogalpa, which is right underneath the still active volcano, Concepcion. We checked into a hotel that had a pet deer that would ... read more

Tonight was the last night with the big ole group, and it was a little sad. I have enjoyed every moment with this folks so much, they are so energetic and incredible! Our last reflection was also really powerful, and I was so happy and surprised (in some cases, very!) when folks commented that myself and people from EE had made such an impression, had really changed their view, had taught them so much. I think its because I feel like fair trade is so a part of my thinking, that advocating and educating and talking about it feel natural and I dont always realize how other people receive it. To share my reflection thoughts: I am leaving with this enormous sense of pride in the farmers we work with, and the ways that they are ... read more
