Hi Hi Hi everyone. So we're alive!!! We've been traveling so much the last few days, plus we both got sick, so we havent really had access or the chance to get onto a computer.
I believe I left off at us being in Xela which is so not a cool place. I mean, it serves its purpose as a homebase for hikes and things, but in general its barely a point under Guatemala City. Big, Dirty, Unsafe and uh, yea.
Planting trees with the trekkers was loads of fun for me but Dax pretty much saw it as unnecessary labor and just wanted to get up the mountain. I'll leave that experience for him to write about as I went back to Xela and became insanely ill. But ya...
Our next day Dax, Jo and I began our travel at 6am from Xela to Chisomething to Antigua to Guatemala City to Coban all in a day... a whole day!!! We arrived in Coban very late at night... there was one hotel in sight that was $30 bucks per person so we opted to keep looking were we came upon some weird appliance building with rooms upstairs
which came out to like $2 per person and since we were only going to be there a few hours we stayed. With the 3inch roaches and all. I didnt sleep and Dax barely slept with all the lights and tv on.
So we're now at Tuesday morning were we made it to Lanquin, the small town just before Semuc Champey and where my little huts are . They were full so we actually moved to another place that was in Semuc and worked out perfectly. It was right on the river where you can swim and tube... there is a bridge that you can jump from. its HIGH dude, and scary... Dax jumped twice. I filmed, lol. Um what else... it was absolutely beautiful, iguanas in the trees and butterflies that flutter around your feet most places. It was very convenient to the caves as well... yea... the caves... put it this way, Pacaya was nothing.
As soon as you enter the cave its dark immediately and all they give you are candles, the catch is that there is swimming that has to take place while holding
these candles. Dax and I had headlights because we're pretty brilliant. I was scared, scared to move scared to swim, clinging to the walls of the cave for my dear life. There were ladders to climb and waterfalls and a bunch of other crazy stuff. Peoples candles were going out, pretty much everyone has some sort of cut, scratch or bruise... but even still, I'd do it again. Dax loved it but I slowed him down a bit . The pictures inside the cave didnt turn out, but we did get some right in front.
Speaking of which, We have all our pics on a disk, just no way to upload them yet because... oh ya... we've returned to Lanquin and we're back at our huts. We totally lucked out and got a room because this place is packed aaaaaaaaaall the time. People come early in the morning and wait until check out praying for a room. But ya, its paradise and blows Lake Atilan out of the water. Last night was a huge party with a $6 all you can eat gormet vegetarian bbq. We have a picture of Dax's plate... insane man!!!
Sorry I'm a
bit scattered, just trying to jot everything down w/o missing stuff. The Chicken buses are horrible to me. They pack you on sooooo soooo tight. People sit on you... sometimes they smell... sometimes babies cry... its hot... and sticky... and bumpy and i dont know... i dont even want to think about it really...
For other travelers reading... El Portal is the hostel in Semuc... just a 2min walk from the park and literally yards from the river... its a good first day place to get all the activites in at your own leisure rather than doing a full day rushed tour... and then its best to spend your second day at El Retiro. There is a cave here that we're doing this evening to see the bats fly out...
um... i dont know... my hands are tired... pc's are weird... and this foreign keyboard is trying me crazy. Stay tuned for Dax's Tulajumolco entry... it was a very difficult but pretty amazing trip for him.
Ciao guys!
