Mayan Ruin in Tikal
Adam and I climbed this ruin and man it was scary! Hi all,
Internet is scarce in N. Guatemala and Belize so these won't be as often as they were when I was stationary and in school. My last night in Antigua consisted of my family there giving me a purse (I've seen several people go and they haven't done anything special for anyone but me that I've seen) and 2 letters from Andres and Maria. It brought tears to my eyes. It was so touching!!!
I went to the Guatemala City Airport to meet Adam and wait a few hours for our flight to Flores. It was so great to finally see him after so long!!!!!!! We flew for about 30 min (vs an 8+ hour bus ride and by now most of you know how much I love Guatemalan drivers 😊 and arrived in an airport that made Melbourne look like Hartsfield. It was too cute. We got a taxi to Tikal and booked a room at the lavish Tikal Inn. (please note the sarcasm). Lavish in this instance means no AC in the JUNGLE with more bugs than you can possibly imagine with a fan, but the power was off between 10pm and 6am. Adam and I
Adam's Proposal
AHHHHHH!!!!! Holy SHIT!!!!! (sorry!!) had to use bugspray to sleep and I had to put in my ear plugs not because it was loud, but bc bugs were buzzing in my ear and they sounded like helicopters! It was paradise!
Initially, we were going to do the 4:30 am sunrise tour of the Mayan ruins (which dates back to 900 BC) but when the alarm went off it was pouring like I've never seen rain and you guys know I've seen some rain in my days in GUA. So we slept a little longer and headed to the ruins at about 8am. I'll let Adam take over from here.........
For those of you I haven't met yet, HELLO!!! Well, we made our way from the Ritz...I mean the Hotel Tikal Inn to the main gate/entrance of the ruins. We worked our way around walking trails and attempted to follow the worst map I've ever seen. We eventually made it to the the Gran Plaza area where the main temples/structures are located. As soon as they came into view, we began hearing more random jungle sounds, but this time they were monkeys and exotic birds. We climbed up Temple II which now has,
On a boat in Belize
We're on our way to San Pedro from our resort! thanks to modern technology, the scariest wooden steps in the world that looked like they were built with popsicle sticks. Elise really loved this part. We got to the top and took a few photos. After an extremely slow descent down the steps, we continued to make our way around the park. About ten nerve-racking minutes later, we came to the Mundo Perdido (Lost World) temple. I saw two people making their way up the steps, so we quickly followed behind them. About 3/4 of the way up, we ran into them and asked them to take a photo of the two of us. This was a great opportunity for a photo as we hadn't seen very many other people in the park. Anyway, I handed the camera to a girl and very quietly asked her to keep snapping away. She gave me a wink, and I knew we were on the same page. After a couple of poses, I DID IT!!! I turned to Elise and explained to her how much I love her and that from the second I first saw her over four years ago, I said to myself, "I can marry a girl like that!!" I
Mata Chica
Here's one of many breathtaking views from our resort. It has hammocks!!!! Heaven! told her that I had spoken to her parents and had their approval weeks earlier and I asked her to marry me. I dug the pseudo-ring out of my pocket (a plain band inscribed with, "Marry me, Love Adam"), and gave it to her after I did my best get-down-on-one-knee-on-the-side-of-a-Mayan-ruin only a couple of hundred feet in the air. If anyone thought I would bring the REAL ring to Central America, you're crazy - you should see some of these places!! She said YES and we sat down and talked for about 30 minutes while monkeys were swinging in the trees above and around us. We very slowly made our way down from the side of the ruin and I informed her that we needed to be in Belize by Monday (the following day) by 3 PM - and that I had another surprise for her.
It's me again (LC) and did you get that......I'm ENGAGED!!!!!!!! That's right, I'm getting MARRIED!!!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!! I had absolutely no idea! I mean, Adam had to stand in front of me so I didn't fall of the ruin. I was crying and could barely stand up! I mean who would've guessed that my ever so practical boyfriend would propose in Central America??!!?? Not I!!!! I mean there were monkeys swinging in the trees! MONKEYS!!!! It was crazy and I will never forget it! I wish I could've told all of you in person, but to be honest, I just can't wait that long!!! I won't be home for almost 2 weeks!
Next, we took the first available ride away from bugville to Flores where we found a cute hotel on Lake Peten Itza called Casa Azul. It had the most gorgous veranda overlooking the lake and we spent most of our time here talking. It was glorious!!! Then we took a long tour bus to Belize City, crossing the scariest and most confusing border Adam and I have ever had the pleasure of crossing. We had to get out off the bus with all of our stuff, get in line to pay to leave Guatemala, then get in another line to enter Belize and then walk about 1/2 a mile to where the bus was waiting, all while there were men constantly offering to change our money. We didn't take them up on this as I knew that they accept credit cards, traveler's checks and American dollars here easily. Once we arrived in Belize City, we took an hour long boat ride to Ambergris Caye, specifically San Pedro where Adam called our resort and a taxi came to take us to the dock where we'd take another boat to our resort. We had lunch while we waited. Let me tell you that Madonna pegged this one right.....it is La Isla Bonita! Our resort, Mata Chica, is nicer than any beach resort I could imagine......the food is incredible with seafood galore (this is heaven compared to beans and rice all day). There are hammocks on every doorstep with lizards and beautiful birds everwhere. Tropical fish swim under our dock so all we have to do is swim outside our front door to see fish that are in my dad's fish tank. Just imagine drinks with umbrellas, a seabreeze and the bluish/greenish water you can imagine. In a word- PARADISE!!! Adam's now worried that our honeymoon won't live up to this place (for good reason). There's so much to think about, so much to plan and to be honest, I'm a tad overwhelmed with it all, but Adam is being great and has convinced me to just enjoy our trip. So for now my most trying decisions include what to order at a restaurant, if I want to go snorkeling, swimming, parasailing, laying out, napping in the hammock, reading my book, going to town, or just doing nothing. No bad choices in that list! I'm so spoiled!!! We're just lucky to be here together! Who could ask for more? And in case you forgot....... I'M GETTING MARRIED!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
