Hello All,
We figured we would add another entry as we have about 5 hours to kill before our 10 hour bus ride to Antiqua... just got back from our jungle trip to Tikal - (an old Mayan City with amazing ruins). but we´ll start from where we left off.
From Caye Caulker we got a water taxi to Belize city (pleased we decided not to spend a night here..) and then caught a bus to Flores - a little town (actually an island) an hour from Tikal. This place is beautiful... small streets with multicoloured buildings and surrounded by a lake, it only took us 30 mins to walk round the whole place, and we took a gorgeous boat ride at sunset - see pics. Dinner with a bottle of vino here cost only $25 so we enjoyed our first bit of restuarant luxury - Guatemalan style! We could have taken a day trip to Tikal from here, but decided to rough it, and go a spend a night in the rainforest at Tikal! When we arrived with our ever-heavy backpacks in the sweltering sun, we asked the receptionist at the Jaguar Inn if they had any rooms
Flores
Multi colored buildings and small cobblestone streets.. with air-conditioning. He looked at us like we were completely insane. Not only did we have no AC (or cable TV as we have been getting used to- yes we havent fully embraced the hostel life yet...!) the hotel also only had electricity and water from 6-9pm (forced curfew!)and 6-9am...!! funnily enough, he only told us that after we had handed over our money.. but it was our first real adventure so we were v. excited.. last night, I (Albert) waited an hour for my eyes to adjust to the pitch black...they never did, and the constant growl of the howler monkeys, hiss of the insects and screaming birds made for an interesting night with very little sleep!
Here comes our first disappointment - We woke up (in the dark) this morning at 4am to catch a sunrise tour of the ruins. We hiked 45 mins in the darkness and walked uphill and up over 200 stairs before finally reaching the top of Templo 4. However, as you can see from the pics, we didnt see the sunrise - the morning was so overcast, we waited for the sun to burn through the fog, but to no avail. We
did revisit the spot (yes, another 200 stairs....) a little later on and it was worth it to see the incredible view. Tikal was breathtaking and it was great to start experiencing different cultures and lifestyles. Belize was a lot of fun, but now we feel truly on the travelling trail...
We are now sitting at an internet cafe back in flores and will be catching our overnight bus in about 6 hours time. Keep your messages coming - we love them! Also we will make sure we make another video soon!!!
big love

P.P.S Guess who found (not exaggerating) 300+ ants all over my clothes, in my bag etc....and guess who didnt find one...
P.P.P.S One day later... We are actually now in Antigua as the internet cafe in Flores wouldn´t upload our pictues, so we survived the bus journey and all is well!! Will bring you an update soon, but so far Antigua is our favourite place - we adore it and
Boat ride
