¡Muy Caliente!¡Muy Caliente!¡Muy Caliente!

Our awesome guide...he said if we got hungry, we could call down one of the stray dogs and have a weenie roast, lol!
Elsa, Christina and I woke up this morning at 4.30, made some ghetto mac ´n cheese we found in the market yesterday, and left under the cover of darkness so we could be outside the school before 6am. I never expected Guate to be creepy in the morning, but when it´s pitch black outside, and you can´t tell where you are because the shops are all closed and bare without their signs, and you can´t figure out for the life of you what kinds of animals are making those creepy noises from the bushes…it´s easy to be a little jumpy! Anyway, we basically sat alongside the street in the dark with our friend Cornell for about ½ hour waiting for our guide to show up…*shrug* Guate time. Just a fun tidbit about our new buddy...Cornell is this gorgeous, blonde, chain-smoking Swiss guy we met through Spanish school. The thing is, ¨Cornell¨ just isn´t a very sexy name, so we always call him ¨our Fabio¨ whenever he´s not around. ;-D

Anyway, it´s about an hour drive to Pacaya, and about ½ of that time is spent on this crazy, windy, washed out dirt road… and just when you think there couldn´t

possibly be anyone around for miles, out pops this little town with a few people and a few more stray dogs. We walked with our guide through the town and went up this windy little trail for about 1 ½ -2hrs to get to the volcano. The view on the way up was absolutely stunning. Even though it was cloudy, we could still see three huge volcanoes all in a row. Agua, Acatenango, and Fuego. From what I could gather from our guide, Acatenango was the one in the middle, and that´s the one the girls and I want to do an overnight hike on in about 2 weeks. That should be a fun, cold night during the rainy season, eh? ;-D

Once we finally got to the top, there was this beautiful stretch of green leading up to the volcano itself… we thought the tour would end there, but since our guide absolutely ROCKED, he took us exploring down on the lava flow itself! I was afraid my tennis shoes were going to melt at first, we were that close to it… but no such luck, lol. We probably played on the lava for over an hour…. Throwing

sticks into it and watching them burn… just standing still and listening to it move all around us. Absolutely amazing. I don´t even have words to describe it. When we were first learning about volcanoes in grade school, I never would have DREAMED that I would actually see it firsthand someday. He even helped us ¨steal¨ some cool lava rocks from the flow, and he even broke one off for me while it was almost too hot to touch! We passed it around like a hot potato for a good few minutes before I wrapped it up in my bag… I still didn´t want to hang on to it for more than a few seconds! (Pastor Scott, I know how much you like rocks and all that, so I made sure to get one for you too.) They´re so beautiful! There were more colors out there than I ever expected to see… everything looks black at first, but there are these mixes of gold, maroon, purple, silver…and of course the bright reds poking out from underneath. SO cool! When we finally popped back out on top, there was this breathtaking view of green mountains nearby with the clouds scattered all

Happy Trails!
