St Anne & Marin, Martinique & Sailing to Guadeloupe

Well, as we learned when we were in Peace Corps – you always need to be flexible. In our last blog we mentioned that we were going to wait in Martinique for a FedEx package (our credit cards), but we heard that there was a great weather window for traveling north to Guadeloupe so made a change of plans and up came the anchor. It is hard to capture what the waves look like when we are sailing. This was taken when sailing along the windward coast of Martinique.

Having our morning pineapple juice while on the best sail we’ve had in a long time. We were definitely going in the right direction and the wind and seas cooperated beautifully.

You need to be watchful of the numerous fishing traps that are scattered throughout the shallower waters surrounding the islands. Many are only marked with small plastic bottles and are difficult to spot.

The sun was setting over Martinique while we were on our sail toward Guadeloupe.

Yes, a view looking ahead while on a night sail. It sure looks dark at first glance, but then you look up and can see a sky full of stars.

We were greeted with a great sunrise on Friday, April 13th while getting closer to Guadeloupe. Still a few more hours of sailing to go before we are there.

After getting anchored Bob checked the deck and the dinghy and found a few dead flying fish – an interesting way to catch fish! These guys can really “fly” – too bad a few always seem to wind up dying on deck.

We were surprised to see a couple of larger flying fish that landed in the dinghy that we carry strapped up in back on the boat – as I said, they definitely can fly quite high unfortunately for them.
