It is very true that this is the land of the very, very good looking...especially the men. We stopped in a cheap hotel on the Malecon , south end, for the first night to get aquainted with the city. The view from the balcony was amazing , i couldnt believe what i was seeing. There is an unusual beauty in a city in a constant state of repair. It was mesmirising as was the ocean. Our surly reception and tacky hotel and budget sent us to the streets to grab a bite for dinner. This is when our culture shock really hit us. It was such an extreme leaving the over commercialised beaches of cancun to the very non existant commercial or consumation society of cuba. It was evident as we walked stunned that we werent in ... read more

Nun denn, rein ins Abenteuer! Hey y'all, G'day! Well, it took us some time to start our blog to keep you updated on our journey around the globe but hey, better take the time than just writing some boring stuff. So let the adventure begin!

"Holguin!" bellowed the bus driver. Off the bus and negotiated the fare to our next casa. Once more a crazy taxi ride, this time one man is teaching another to drive! Part of the lesson includes the skill of turning off the engine when going downhill to save petrol. It's a green car. We pulled up at a group of three storey communist style apartment blocks, square concrete cubes stacked together. The sun was going down, the area looked really dodgy and I thought the next few minutes would be crucial as we waited for our host to arrive on his bicycle. All turned out ok - Holguin was one of the safest cities so far in Cuba and the owner was a gent. Top chef too. Rise and shine Sunday morning to explore the city. ... read more

Hello to all and to all a good night! We arrived into Mexico City after an 11 hour flight from Heathrow on Monday 15th September. After a horribly long wait in immigration and the taxi rank we eventually made it to our hostel. It was dark, we were tired and with it being our first time there we were both a little anxious about it all. Some more than others! It all worked out fine though. That night we met a yank and an Ozzie lad and they showed us around some of the area which apparently was rather well to do. We went around the local markets, had some eats and just looked around. As has been the case since we arrived here, when we´re ordering something we´re not entirely sure what we´re getting. It ... read more

Made it to Monteverde! Carolyn and I were picked up this morning, ecstatic to say good bye to Jimmy’s Cabañas. We drive about 20 minutes around the Volcano to Lake Arenal. We hop on a smallish boat and speed across the lake. Nice views, ride lasted maybe 15-20 minutes maybe and then we wait for the van to pick us up on the other side. This is where the adventure begins. This is the roughest, bumpiest road in Costa Rica. Views are amazing; you just keep driving higher and higher into the clouds. Lots of coffee fields, cows, and horses to keep me entertained. Arrive in Monteverde, drop off the other travelers at a nice hilltop resort, whereas Carolyn and I go to the Pension Santa Elena, not a resort. An alright place to hang your ... read more

Writing this, we're just back from a day on horseback in El Valle de Los Ingenios (a valley near Trinidad where the colonial sugar plantations were once situated) and we've both got VERY sore bums indeed! The horses led us along stoney mountain trails, over a railway line, through three rivers and up to a cascading waterfall where we cooled down in the crystal clear waters. We both had quite different experiences so here's a version of the day from each of us. My Day Out With Crazy Horse By Jess Apparently you only need to know three things to ride a horse in Cuba: right, left and stop. What they don't tell you is in fact you also need a disregard for helmets and a tight grip. We were thrown straight into the deep end. ... read more

After Baracoa we went back to Santiago for a night. Colin wanted to visit a place called El Cobre, so we found ourselves another ¨illegal¨ taxi and headed off. This time round our car was a battered 1957 Dodge Plymouth. We took the back roads out for one or more of the following reasons: a) to avoid police checkpoints (remember he isnt meant to pick up tourists), b) to show us how bad the roads can be and how much they damage his car (read ask for more money), and c) to take longer to try and justify a higher price. El Cobre...I´m not sure what I was expecting but I was disappointed. For some reason we thought that this church had a copper dome, but I guess we had mis-read something somewhere. The cobre, copper, ... read more

To those of you who I revealed our travel plans to, whose eyes shot wide open and mouths dropped to the ground (as if you got a pinch on the bum); the ones who were too polite to question us or call us crazy, even if that was what you wanted to say. You know who you are! Last night (23rd September) might go a little way to explaining our motives. When at home and working, you never seem to have the time or you are too tired to enjoy the simple things in life. More to the point, you forget or don't notice. After dinner (about 9pm) we went up to the roof our 'casa' to gaze at the lightning storm. The storms arrive after the hot day and its like nothing we've ever seen. ... read more

We got liberty at Guantanamo on two occasions - the first during the big refueling and resupply stop we made, where we were allowed off the ship for about 6 hours one day and 4 hours the next. We stopped at Guantanamo again on the way to a liberty port in Puerto Rico and were allowed off for another 2 plus hours. The base has about 10,000 people, and many amenities. We were allowed to go to the Navy Exchange and Commissary (combination grocery and department store), which was very lucky because my trusty camera that had been to Pakistan and back gave up the ghost 2 days before liberty. I was able to purchase a new one. While they don't allow the taking of photographs, I did take a picture of me near the base ... read more

If you are blind, use a wheelchair, or are unsteady on your feet and heading to Havana, TURN BACK NOW! Havana may be one of the most beautiful cities in the world but its footpaths are like an army assualt course, and a very dangerous one at that. A mine field would be no hassle to us anymore. The first few days in Havana were spent looking at our feet and warning each other..."Mind that hole", "Careful there", "God that´s dangerous", "Hole!", "Careful", "Dog poo", "Watch Out", "Good god", "Hole", "Poo"...and I could go on. Some holes even had rusty bars sticking out, ready to rupture someone´s leg. Or maybe there were cunning traps for mojito-drunk tourists at night?! In Vedado, because all the streets are lined with old trees, the strong roots have now lifted ... read more
