Ignoring all advice to take a local (European) summer holiday we decided to make the most of free air travel for Heidi whilst we can and went long haul to Cuba! It is a destination we nearly visited during our Central America trip some years back and is somewhere we have wanted to go to for a long time. We cheated slightly by booking an all inclusive but compromised with a few nights in Havana and also some trips from our resort into the interior - not quite backpacking - but with Heidi in tow we needed a bit of luxury and organisation! So, in true form Sally spent several hours on trip advisor to work out which hotel did the best buffet, found a good deal, upgraded our flights to Virgin Atlantic - and we ... read more

Cuba Wednesday When we left Havana airport we realized immediately that we were in Cuba and could not be in any other country in the world. Why not? Because of the time-slip scene of colourful and huge American automobiles from the 1950s which chug and growl down every road. I knew they still existed in Cuba, but I thought they would be scarce sight. But no. They were everywhere. There were other cars, of course, and even some modern cars, but the "old timers" as they are called, are the ones which grab your attention. It was a unique and fascinating scene. But more on cars later. On the drive into Havana city from the airport we passed many of the concrete buildings, often painted Cuba-flag blue, which were built during the “Russian” era when Cuba ... read more

As music lovers, my husband and I always wanted to experience Cuba in a more local setting. We had been to the all-inclusive resorts, which are great if you just want to lie in the sun, eat and drink. We are more adventurous than this, so we decided a week in Havana would be perfect for us. And it was! The music, the architecture, the people ... all met our expectations and more! Even the fellow travellers we met were more in tune to our way of travelling. We stayed right in Old Havana, at the Parque Central Hotel. This hotel was modern, clean, service was great and staff very helpful. We wandered the streets most of the time, map in hand, and were awed by the buildings, both restored and crumbling, that make up this ... read more

Some places attract our imagination more than others, and La Havana is one of these great mystical place. I don't know really where to start this entry, as there are tenth of ways to write about the Capital of Cuba. May I start by a wish, that the leaders of the country will stop keeping their own people trap like in a jail, unable to provide a lot of the basic necessities and choices that the 21st century should bring to such nice people. It's a wish, but I'm sure it's just a question of time... Why come to La Habana, multiple reasons, for the people, the cigars, the rum, the jump straight back in the past, or even for the architecture. We did all this, plus some diving and even a round of golf. After ... read more

FIRST CLASS OF CUBAN PRISON CHAPLAINS GRADUATE On Thursday, 16 June 2011, a total of 87 pastors and lay leaders made up the first graduating class of prison chaplains in Cuba. Co-sponsored by the Ecumenical Council of Churches in Cuba and the Ecumenical Seminary in Matanzas, the graduation took place at the Quaker Center in Gibara, on Cuba’s northeast coast. Most of these graduates, from 26 different denominational backgrounds, have done prison visitation for years. With the Cuban government’s easing of restrictions on church contact with inmates, Dr. Francisco Rodés, retired pastor of First Baptist Church, Matanzas, saw a significant opportunity to increase the Cuban churches’ ministry among inmates. “Few of these chaplains receive economic support for this work,” said Rodés, who now serves as the Cuban Council of Churches’ national coordinator for prison ministry and ... read more

After a 16 hour plane ride, another 2.5 hour plan ride, a night in Cancun, followed by another 2 flights we finally landed in Santiago de Cuba, what had to be more than 48 hours after we left Sydney. Needless to say we were very tired, but at the same time very excited to begin our adventure. What we really wanted to do was just eat and have a sleep, but we decided to go out to dinner and walk around for a bit. Lucky we did as we ended up having one of our best nights in Cuba. Turns out it was the last night of the Festival del Sol or Festival of the Sun in Cuba. The main square was packed with the locals just hanging out dancing and listening to the live music. ... read more

I arrived to Cuba once again with little or no idea of where I was staying or even where in Cuba I was gonna go and how long I would stay in each place. In fact, all I knew of Cuba was the information I’d managed to retain from reading another backpacker’s Lonely Planet Cuba guide for a couple of hours on the eve of the flight. I never meant to go so ill-prepared and I’d always planned to read up a bit more, but what with all the beaches to lie on and the jacuzzis to soak in I just hadn’t found the time. One thing I had found out was that it’s a hefty $25 USD taxi ride from the airport to downtown Habana. I made big efforts to save some money and come ... read more

LEIGH WROTE A WONDERFUL STORY ABOUT OUR TRIP TO THE CAVE WITH A MAGICAL SWIMMING HOLE (SEE PICTURE OF RACHEL FLOATING). SADLY, THE STORY COULD NOT BE FOUND AT PRESS TIME. IF IT TURNS UP, WE WILL POST IT LATER. KNOW THAT LEIGH IS BACK TO HER OLD SELF AFTER A FEW WEEKS OF AN ENERGY-DRAINING AND BELLY-ACHING SICKNESS. Joy Cucita Ever since I stopped going to Cuban school, I have had a Spanish teacher named Cucita. I go to her house for class every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2-3 p.m. I have noticed a great change in my Spanish since I started classes with her. She has helped me a lot and I am grateful. Cucita’s house is on the main street called 2 de Mayo. It is about 2 ½ blocks from the ... read more

Cuba!! by Rachael Arriving in Havana!! We had visions of scary immigration control upon arriving in Cuba but as usual with most things on this trip it was a lot less daunting in reality. However we did have a bit of drama upon leaving the airport - we had booked into a hostel and were quite perturbed when none of the taxi drivers or any locals had heard of it...finally we were taken to a random house and discovered it was actually a casa particular -which is what we stayed in the entire time in Cuba, where you stay in a family´s home and they cook your meals for you, rather than staying in a touristy hotel. More complications followed as the owner Oscar unfortunately couldn´t have us to stay as his bathroom was broken or ... read more

The legend Whether you love him or despise him, there's no denying that Fidel Castro is one of the giants of the 20th century. Now very much in the twilight of his life, Cuba today is still Fidels Cuba. After surviving a reported 638 assassination attempts, he still thumbs his nose nearly daily at the U.S.A. in his column in Cubas "Granma Internacional" newspaper column. In his distaste for capitalism, and what he terms "neo-liberal globalisation" he has kept Cuba in a different time. No public advertising or billboards and no McDonald's, Starbucks or any of the other chains can be seen anywhere on the island, which is a real treat. Why travel if you are only going to see the same things you see every day during the daily grind? Unfortunately, this will probably soon ... read more
