An hour from now our group will load like the pairs of animals into Noah's ark, two by two, but for us into some of the vintage American cars that are so common in Havana. It's our last night, our farewell dinner, and we will be riding to the restaurant in these well preserved cars, that the men have been ogling since we arrived. There are all makes, all colors (with a surprising brilliant pink predominating), dating from between the late 1940s to the late '50s. I asked one man in our group who seemed smitten and knowledgeable about old cars if he had seen any Packards here, and he said there were, so I kept on looking for one. I never saw a Packard. As a very young child, four years old, I remember standing ... read more

We have three full days scheduled in Havana and today was the first one. On the go from 8:30AM until just before 5PM, we have visited a daycare center run by nuns for two to four year olds, stopped to see Del Morro fortress (bookending El Morrow Castle in Santiago de Cuba), and the eighteen meter high sculpture of the Havana Christ; we walked through and enjoyed the beauty of Havana's four main squares, plus explored parts of Havana Vieja, Old Havana. But that's not all! After a disappointingly mediocre lunch at another paladar (a family run restaurant - where most meals had been exceptionally good), we went to the large arts and crafts market. Most of us had already completed our shopping, and soon grew weary of all the shopkeepers seeing us and calling out, ... read more

We have slept two nights here in Cienfuegos, and yet it's only this morning that we'll have a walking tour of its Old Town, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. My walking partner and I did explore a bit, late yesterday afternoon before dinner, but except for us two, and occasionally a third woman and one man who tends to go off by himself, this group doesn't like to walk much, at least (so they say) in Cuba's heat and humidity. But I love it! It took a few days to adjust, but sweating is good and we are infinitely washable. Whenever possible I prefer exploring on foot rather than by peeking through the windows of a bus; that is being a tourist; I prefer - and view myself as - being a traveller. Thus the ... read more

In 2008 the old city center of Camaguey became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for very good reasons. As our bus entered and drove through twisty, narrow streets full of bici-taxis (human powered bicycle rickshaws), people, and some cars and motorcycles, very quickly I couldn't figure out any direction at all. These streets are like a labyrinth, a maze purposely built this way to confuse pirates and any other attackers, to try to keep the city center safe from marauders. Even with my usually good sense of direction, I needed a map to keep from getting lost. I didn't explore the old city center as much as I'd have liked to do, but one other woman and I walked the length of the longest pedestrian street (less than a mile long) both evenings we were there. ... read more

Sunday, our first full day in this country, was a jam-packed day exploring Santiago de Cuba. One of the first European settlements here, it is also the city where Fidel Castro launched the revolution. At the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery we watched the militaristic changing of the guard, saw the mausoleum of Cuba's most famous writer, Jose Martis, and visited the Morro Castle, which very much reminded me of the fortresses in San Jose, Puerto Rico. Eddy said they were constructed around the same time, thus the similarity. The day was hot, hot, hot, and heavy with humidity. Only one woman and I - along with Eddy - climbed to the top of Morro Castle, and gazed out over the beautiful placid blue ocean, again reminding me of Puerto Rico. But we couldn't stop sweating even after ... read more

Our tour director, Emilio, was born in Cuba. He's lived in Miami for many years, but returns to lead Vantage tours and tells us a different side of Cuba from his American perspective. He says Americans are naive, and that what we hear from our government-required Cuban guide, Eddy, is propaganda, but the only story Eddy knows. So when Eddy is not around, and when the group is in a relatively private place, Emilio tells us what he understands is really happening. All the information is very interesting but also confusing. Apparently nothing is as it seems. When we arrived at the airport several of us felt that Emilio should have been there to smooth and facilitate our way into the country. Where was our leader at this somewhat problematic and slightly difficult entry point? We ... read more

We have had what feels like a full day already here in Santiago de Cuba, but it's only 3PM. After a busy morning touring the historic district and Morro Castle (which looked very similar to one my youngest daughter and I had climbed through in San Juan, Puerto Rico), we are having a bit of downtime; then we're heading back out to explore Cuba's second largest city some more, go to a nightclub, the Casa de la Trova, maybe (hopefully) dance, and then have dinner here in this beautiful 5 star hotel, the Melia Santiago de Cuba. I guess we're all still a bit worn out from yesterday's long travels, but there's no time zone change this time, for me at least. Our guide, Emilio, is older, very kind and knowledgeable, and working with a younger ... read more

There are multiple ways to travel from Varadero to Havana. We could travel by bus which would cost 10 CUC per person, plus the taxi to the bus station. So in total an amount of 40 CUC, plus the transportation from Havana bus station to your accommodation. For a taxi one way you will pay average 100 CUC. Thanks to the guard of the hotel we found another option, using the collective taxi, which is a ‘friend’ of the guard who collects a number of persons and share the costs. With this option we paid 50 CUC door to door by taxi. We agreed to leave the next day around noon. The next morning, after breakfast and preparing a small bag to spend a night in Havana, we waited to the taxi. The other passengers were ... read more

The beginning of a long waited travel. After waking up and a quick breakfast we went to Amsterdam/Schiphol airport for a long flight. Cuba is waiting for us. The check in and custom checks went quite smoothly and there were no delays. We were flying with a Tui fly Dreamliner. As most of our flights were not too long, we never experienced such a comfortable airplane as this one. The service and entertainment was excellent. 10 hours passed and we landed at Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport. The passport check was not much different than any other passport checks. We had to fill in a tourist card, which is a replacement for a visa for a stay of max 30 days. Apparently they are registering everyone who are entering Cuba. We had to take our glasses off ... read more

I'm having a bit of a final catch up of our last few days in Cuba now that we're back home and have some internet. It's been a nice break from 'The outside world'.....but quite annoying not being able to get any information or check anything! Santa Clara Just an overnight stay in Santa Clara to break the journey back to Havana. known now mostly for the large monument to Che Guevara as it was here that he blew up the train carrying all the weapons and reinforcements for Batista's forces in the city. The town was really buzzing in the evening as it was Valentine's day, lots of people carrying one flower...no large over the top bouquets here! Our final few days are back nearer Havana on the coast for a few days of R&R. ... read more
