Edit Blog Post
OK we admit it, we are running a bit late with these blogs! All the elements seem to be working against us - bad PC's, bad stomachs and even website failure (which is why our previous blogs are no longer available..). So sorry for that!
It seemed to us that time stopped in Cuba in 1959 (the revolution "bought light" into the country). The buildings, the cars, the streets, the technologies and maybe even the people didn't seem to change since that time.
Our first experience
of the Cuban way was at the bank trying to change money. The place was full of people but everything seemed to be organized. The guards point you to your queue amongst the many, and every newcomer is politely asking "El ultimo" and taking his place. BUT in 40 minutes not ONE person managed to finish their transaction. The lady in a booth behind us, finished her brunch and maybe even the lunch without touching her computer for a second. People were running around with lots of papers in their hand and an important look, and yet nothing happened. So we reacted as any good European would have - we got red in the face and gave up in the hope of finding somewhere else.
Elso talalkozasunk ezzel a masik vilaggal, a bankban esett meg. Az elso bankrol rogton lemondtunk, miutan az utcan kigyozott a sor. Kovetkezo probalkozasunk mar jobbnak latszott. Ugy tunt, minden szervezetten mukodik.
One thing that repeatedly caught our attention were the messages/reminders dotted all around Cuba. Statements about the meaning of socialism, the revolution, leader quotes and Che were ever present, even in remote places. But despite a very strong governmental message across all forms of media, the internet is available but at a high price (even for the tourists) which restricts the Cubans access.
Ami nagyon megfogott bennunket azok az ismetlodo uzenetek/emlekeztetok a szocializmus es forradalom ertelmerol, nagy elodok es vezetok idezetei (kedvencem: A munka nemesit! ismersos nem!?) es Che allando jelenlete a elgeldugottabb zugban is. Habar ugy tunik a kormany egyertelmu uzenete folyik a csapbol is, ma mar elerheto az internet csillagaszati arakon (meg nekunk is elgondolkodato volt az internethasznalat), ami erosen korlatozza a helyi felhasznalokat. The presence of double standards in several areas really caught our attention. The most
obvious one was the double currency, where only the rich, fortunate and tourist related people have access to the 'good' money (CUC). The rest are paid in local money worth 1/24 of the CUC, with which only a tiny fraction of the goods can be bought. A taxi driver earns far more in CUC than any doctor, engineer, specialist in the country (being paid in local currency). Other inconsistencies were that locals are not allowed to eat beef (only the foreigners can), and even some beaches (most probably the best) are forbidden to the locals. Despite all this many of the modern luxuries can be bought if you have the right currency and enough of it
(Mind helyi valutaban kapjak a beruk.)
Another Blog on Cuba will come soon.
Folyt. kov....
